Déri Miklós és Turay Balázs sorozatai a Magyarországon is átvonuló menekülő
emberekről. Fotókiállítás a Bálint Házban.

Nagy a képek felelőssége, ahogy azoké is, akik nézik őket. Az utóbbi
hónapok menekültválságát rendkívül könnyű volt úgy látni és láttatni, mint
egy homogén, áthatolhatatlan, arctalan, ijesztő tömeg vonulását.
Fotókiállításunkban azt mutatjuk meg, hogy a rájuk vethető pillantás olyan
is lehet, amely őket hétköznapi, hozzánk hasonlóan békére és biztonságra
vágyó, de kényszerűségek okán idegenbe vetett, gyakran kiszolgáltatott
helyzetbe került emberekként mutatja be.

Ha felidézzük családi fotóinkat, akkor nem sok meglepőt láthatunk Déri
Miklós képein – legalábbis abból a szempontból, hogy az egyik legfontosabb
kötődésünk hogyan juthat bennük kifejeződésre. A gyerekek ölben,
védő-szerető kezekben vannak, vagy éppen nevetgélve, egymásba karolva
álldogálnak, míg a szülők a hátteret adják, minden értelemben. Ez eléggé
ismerős.

A szerencsésebbek számára ugyanakkor teljességgel ismeretlen az, ami nem
látszik ezeken a fotókon. Mert itt nem az egyént a tömegbe rántó,
láthatatlanná tevő, a mainstream média képei által mutatott kontextus
(azaz: köztereken éjszakázás, mások segítségére való ráutaltság, fortyogó
indulatok stb.) a téma, hanem éppen ez tűnik el. A kontextus, amely
bélyegként vetül emberekre és csoportokra, s amely nemcsak őket magukat,
hanem azt a (családi-, emberi-) közösségi hálót is eltünteti, amely
mindannyiunkat a leginkább meg tud tartani.

Turay Balázs képei is kiemelik alanyaikat a tömegből, de máshogyan. Az ő
fotói javarészt áramló, spontán pillanatfelvételek a válság emblematikus
helyszíneiről és eseményeiről, Budapestről és vidékről. Turay jelen volt és
van (és nem csak ott volt) a kulcsszituációkban. Nála a történések
kontextusa is rendkívül lényeges és meg is jelenik a képeken. Csak éppen a
fókusz kerül máshová. A kaotikusnak tűnő tömegjelenetek ritmikus, sűrű
felszíne mögül, vagy éppen a sötétség alól erős kontúrokkal válnak ki
arcok, a szereplők számára fontos mozzanatok, gesztusok, mikro-történések.
A fotók között van, amely az események sodrából villant fel helyzeteket,
mintegy dokumentálva őket. Más fényképek pedig azt a sokunk számára
elképzelhetetlen krízist jelenítik meg szimbolikus sűrűséggel, amely
tulajdonképpen bármelyikünk életében bekövetkezhet. Mutatják a
határhelyzetet, az úton levést, a hatalmas ég alatt az egymásba
kapaszkodást, mint megtartó erőt.

Néha akár egy fotós pillantása is elég lehet ahhoz, hogy ráirányítsa a
figyelmünket arra, ami igazán fontos: a másik emberre, az egyéni sorsokra,
és a bennü(n)k rejlő azonosságokra.

Photographs as well as people who look at them bear a huge responsibility.
In the past few months it was easy to view and present the refugee crisis
as a procession of a homogenic, impenetrable and frightening mass in which
human beings became faceless and indistinguishable. In our exhibition we
offer a different way to look at these people, helping the viewer realize
that they, just like us, are everyday people who wish to live in a peaceful
and secure world. These images help us understand how refugees are forced
to flee their homes, often to find themselves in a vulnerable position in a
foreign country.

We only have to think of our own family photos to feel that there is
nothing unusual about DÉRI Miklós’s pictures, or at least in their way they
present one of our most basic bonds in life. The children here are sitting
on the laps of their parents, being protected by their loving hands. Others
we see standing in the front arm in arm, laughing, whith their parents
providing the backgroud in every sense of the word. These are situations we
are all familiar with.

At the same time for those of us who have been lucky enough not to have
gone through such a crisis, all that cannot be seen in these photos would
be completely unknown. These photos cannot be read in the context of the
images currently so popular in mainstream media, where individuals are no
more than invisible parts of a crowd (often pictured spending the night in
public spaces, being presented as people needing the help of others or in
situations full of raging emotions etc.). It is exactly this context that
is missing from these photos: the context that stigmatizes individuals as
well as groups and eliminates not only their individuality but also the
fundamental interconnectedness (as a family, as humans) that has a
sustaining power stronger than anything else in our lives.

The photos of Balázs Turay also distinguish their subjects from the crowd,
but in a different way. His photos are mostly spontaneous snapshots of the
emblematic scenes of the refugee crisis, flowing with the events taking
place in Budapest and in the country. Turay has been and is still present
(always wholeheartedly) at the most decisive moments of the crisis. The
context of the events is a crucial element for him which is made obvious in
his pictures. But the focus is elsewhere. Mass scenes may seem chaotic at
first but from behind the rhythm of their crowded surface or from the depth
of their darkness faces with strong contours emerge, moments and gestures
become visible – micro-events that mean a lot to those who took part in
them. Some of the photos are highlighting scenes from the course of events,
which is also a way of documenting them. Others show the crisis with an
almost symbolic complexity, thus depicting something that most of us cannot
even imagine but that could become the tragic reality for all of us at any
moment. These images tell us about experiencing borders in every sense,
about being on a journey and about the sustaining power of holding on to
each other under the immense sky.

Sometimes a single glance of a photographer is enough to guide our
attention to what is really important: the other person, individual lives
and what we all have in common.
