„Die Irren sind los“ – ritzte ein Zuschauer im September 1962 in das Plakat der Fluxus – Internationale Festspiele Neuester Musik in Wiesbaden. Der 50. Fluxus-Jahrestag 2012 ist Anlass eine neue Sicht auf die radikalen künstlerischen Aktionen der 1960er und 70er zu präsentieren. Eine multimediale Ausstellungsinstallation dokumentiert die historischen Fluxus-Ereignisse und lädt zur interaktiven Begegnung mit Aktionen, Künstlern und Zeitzeugen ein. 

Ab 1962 wurde eine Reihe von Städten in ganz Europa Schauplatz von Fluxus-Ereignissen. Eine lose Formation junger Künstler wurde dadurch bekannt, dass sie „eine Weile mit Butter und Eiern hantierten“, sich auf der Bühne die Haare rasierten, einen Konzertflügel zerlegten und Salatköpfe sprengten. Ein Sturm der Entrüstung bei Publikum und Medien brach los: „Musik mit Ei“, „They hang up cabbage and say it’s art“, „Neueste Musik im Irrenhausstil“! Die Künstler – Eric Andersen, George Brecht, Dick Higgins, Alison Knowles, George Maciunas, Nam June Paik, Ben Patterson, Ben Vautier, Wolf Vostell, Emmett Williams und viele andere – hatten es sich zum Ziel gemacht, die Grenzen der Kunst zu sprengen, den bürgerlichen Kunstbegriff und das ‚klassische‘ Kunstwerk zu überwinden.

Während die noch aktiven Künstler Fluxus auch heute in Ideen und Aktionen gestalten, bemüht sich eine wachsende Zahl von Kunsthistorikern/Kuratoren, die Fluxus-Geschichte in ihrer Vielfalt zu erforschen und zu präsentieren. Trotzdem ist das Wissen über viele europäische Ereignisse noch in rudimentärem Zustand; es ist daher höchste Zeit, in einer internationalen Kooperation Forschungsergebnisse zu bündeln, bislang unentdecktes Material zugänglich zu machen und vor allem Künstlern und Zeitzeugen Gehör zu verschaffen. 

„Die Irren sind los …“ FLUXUS-EREIGNISSE IN EUROPA 1962-1977 zeigt 

-       eine Rekonstruktion der europäischen Fluxus-Ereignisse in einer interaktiven und multimedialen Ausstellungsinstallation
-       Do-it-yourself-Fluxus-Installationen, die eigene Realisierungen von Fluxus-Stücken im Ausstellungsraum ermöglichen 
-       Aktionen im öffentlichen Raum  
-       Performances und Begegnungen zwischen Künstlern und Publikum 
-       eine Publikation mit ausführlicher Dokumentation der historischen Ereignisse und künstlerischen Beiträgen.  

Die Ausstellung ist ein erster Schritt zur Aufarbeitung der historischen Fluxus-Ereignisse in Europa. Auch während der Ausstellungslaufzeit werden weiterhin Zeitzeugen gesucht und das Projekt ist offen für neues Material. Im Anschluss an die Präsentation in der Berliner Akademie der Künste, Hanseatenweg, ist die Ausstellung in Poznań, Krakau, Kopenhagen, Vilnius und Paris zu sehen. Eine Auswahl der Dokumentation ist vom 3. Juni bis 30. Oktober im Stadtmuseum Wiesbaden innerhalb der Ausstellung Fluxus 50 - live dokumentiert zu sehen

“The lunatics are on the loose” – a spectator scratched this comment into the poster of the first festival called “Fluxus” held in Wiesbaden in September 1962. The 50th anniversary of Fluxus provides an opportunity to present a new perspective on its radical art actions. A multimedia exhibition installation documents the Fluxus events of the 1960s and 1970s and offers active encounters with art actions, artists and eyewitnesses.

Since 1962 a series of European cities witnessed Fluxus events. This loose formation of artists became known for shaving their heads on the stage, “working with butter and eggs for a while,” dismantling a piano and blowing up lettuce. The audience and media were outraged: “Music with eggs”, “They hang up cabbage and say it’s art”, “Newest Music in Madhouse-Style” – Eric Andersen, George Brecht,  Dick Higgins, Alison Knowles, George Maciunas, Nam June Paik, Ben Patterson, Mieko Shiomi, Ben Vautier, Emmett Williams and many others set their goal to break down the boundaries of art and overcome a bourgeois notion of art.

While the artists who still remain active today work on furthering and (re)forming Fluxus ideas and actions, an ever growing number of art historians and curators are researching and presenting the history of Fluxus in all its variety. Nevertheless, the wider knowledge on the European Fluxus festivals is still rudimentary. Therefore, it is high time to bring together research results in an international project, make previously undiscovered material accessible and most of all, draw attention to the artists’ and eyewitnesses’ perspectives.

-       a reconstruction of European Fluxus festivals by means of an interactive multimedia exhibition installation 

-       do-it-yourself Fluxus installations, offering an opportunity to perform Fluxus pieces within the exhibition space 

-       actions in public space 

-       performances and encounters between artists and audiences  

-       a publication including an extensive documentation of historical events and artistic contributions 

The exhibition is meant as a first step towards processing the historic Fluxus events in Europe. During the exhibition the search for eyewitnesses will continue, leaving the project open for further material. After the presentation in the Akademie der Künste, Hanseatenweg in Berlin the exhibition will travel to Poznań, Krakow, Copenhagen, Vilnius and Paris. A selection of the documentation can also be seen at the Stadtmuseum Wiesbaden from 3. June to 30. October within the exhibition Fluxus 50 - live dokumentiert.
