halász andrás festomuvész, a budapesti magyar képzomuvészeti foiskolán diplomázott festo és képgrafika szakon 1976-ban. a hetvenes években a magyarországi progresszív szellemu muvészeti életnek volt a vezeto figurája. már a foiskolai években szervezoje volt a rózsa-kör elnevezésu avantgárd csoportosulásnak, amely a rózsa eszpresszóban tartott fluxus jellegu bemutatókat. a foiskola elvégzése után sokféle mufajt kipróbált, fotogramokat, grafikákat, konceptuális munkákat készített és performance-okat rendezett, rendszeresen szerepelt alternatív klubokban, muvelodési házakban, valamint magánlakásokban rendezett kiállításokon. elso egyéni kiállítására a székesfehérvári ifjúsági házban került sor l978-ban, ahol fotóit és fotógramjait az érdek fogalma köré rendezve mutatta be. ugyanebben az évben a bercsényi klubban károlyi zsigmond festomuvésszel közösen hiány címmel rendezett filozofikus tartalmú environmentet. 1979-ben vallás címmel egy háromrészes kiállítás- és performance-sorozat keretében szintén fotogramokat mutatott be. ez utolsó magyarországi kiállítása is volt egyben, még abban az évben eloször párizsba majd new yorkba emigrált.

new yorkban kezdett el igazán festészettel foglalkozni. l982-ben elnyerte a PS 1 /project studios one/ nemzetközi muvészház kétéves ösztöndíját, amely az ösztöndíj mellett mutermet és rendszeres bemutatkozási lehetoséget is biztosított. a kilencvenes évek elején a játék, a szerencsejáték, mint konkrét élmény és mint világ-modell vagy sorsmetafora több muvének meghatározó témája volt. computer-grafikai sorozata a szerencsejátékban rejlo, a valószínuségre és a véletlenre vonatkozó matematikai-fizikai-filozófiai összefüggések képi megjelenítése volt.

egész más formában jelent meg a játék témája a biliárd-festményeken. egy olyan új festoi koncepciót valósított meg, amelyben a valóság és annak ábrázolása alig választható el egymástól: a biliárdasztal méretu, zöld biliárd-posztóra festett képsor hol a jelen idoben történo valóságos biliárd-játszma közvetlen lenyomatának, hol a játék expresszív képi ábrázolásának tunik.

egyetemi évei elotti katonaélményeire emlékezett a keki színu pokrócokra festett alvó katonák-sorozattal. ezt a témát computer-grafikában és egy önéletrajzi dokumentumregényben is feldolgozta, new york is my vietnam címmel. muvei több new york-i galériában szerepeltek, többek között azokban az east village-i  galériákban, amelyek a nyolcvanas években a legprogresszívebb, legfrisebb irányzatokat mutatták be. /arts and commerce, 1983; la galerie en el bohio, l985; walter thorne, 1987; richard anderson gallery, 1990; janos gat gallery, l993/.

1995-ben a budapesti ernst múzeum rendezte meg retrospektív kiállítását, amelyen a korábbi munkák mellett új festmények is szerepeltek. 

a kilencvenes évek végétol festészetébol fokozatosan elhagyja a koncepciót, tartalmat és a tiszta festoi látványra koncentrál. 1997-tol számítható máig tartó legújabb, csendéletek-periódusa. környezetében található hétköznapi, közönséges tárgyakból /asztal, szék, létra, festékesvödör, rezsó lábassal, ruhadarab, ruhásszekrény, computer, tekercs vászon, mosógép, bubblewrap tekercs, muanyag palack/ állítja össze szikár kompozícióit. új képeit a new york-i D.U.M.B.O. /a down under the manhattan bridge overpass/ elnevezésu, a brooklyn-híd környéki új muvésznegyedben bérelt mutermében kedte festeni és ugyanitt mutatta be oket az ún. open studios keretében.

2002 óta a halász andrás antwerpenben és budapesten él, legújabb képei foleg ezen a két helyen láthatóak /artist's studio, antwerpen, 2004; 1st floor gallery, antwerpen, 2005; boycott art gallery, brussels, 2006; start galéria, budapest, 2006/.

jelenleg a budapesti magyar képzomuvészeti egyetemen tanít festészetet.

andras halász, painter finished his studies at the hungarian fine art school /today university/ 1976. in the 70's in hungary he was one of the leading figures of this progressive art movement. in the art school, he organized an avant-garde group called the rose circle which hold fluxus style events in the rose espresso-bar, hence the name rose circle. after finishing his studies he experimented many different art form like photograms, conceptual works, performances. his first one-man show titled interest, in székesfehervár in 1978. the show consisted photos and photograms. in the same year, he and zsigmond károlyi /painter/ created an installation titled void which was closed down by the officials before the opening night to open it later /bercsényi club, budapest/, when only few people could see. he renewed the traditional language of the photograms in order to illustrate philosophical paradoxes in pure visual mode. before he left hungary he exhibited photograms again within a series of so called performances, in 1979. the three part series titled religion. his idea was to investigate relation between art and religion. in 1979 he left for paris and settled down in new york.

as he settled down in new york he explored painting. in 1982, he was awarded with studio space in PS1 /project studios one/ by the nyc art council, which also provided frequent possibilities to show his paintings. halász's most successful works were the black on black paintings, in this period. 

some of the experiences were not even suitable for painting, per say. like in the late 80's gambling was fact of his life, greatly suffered by it, yet managed to look at the game as a material to modeling the fate or world according by him. 38 pieces graphic series of the roulette are clearly abstract renditions of randomness and probability. the schematic representation has very little to do with the actual game. the images resembled a scientific illustration more than anything else.

another obsession, playing billiard was recreational for him not associated with pain and guilt, apparently not as stark or abstract as the roulette. playing, as a theme appeared in 1992 in different form namely the 34 pieces actually painted. 

while at it, the same painterly approach has been realized another series titled the sleeping soldiers. 10 pieces are paintings on military blankets. figures are turning, moving in their sleep, based on halász's time when he was drafted in the hungarian people's army /65-67/.

it is hard to tell, the returning subject, serving in the army, was because his "coming to the age" /growing up/ experience, in other words becoming man or because that was equivalent a prison sentence for a young hungarians had to go through. halász even put down on paper in his "memoir" a non-fictional novel; titled new york is my vietnam. the novel lavishly illustrated with computer-generated images, which actually rendered the writing somewhat secondary.

as soon as he could legally returned to budapest /since 1989/ halász eagerly showed his new works there.

the recent paintings grew out from that period are showing less and less conceptual elements. 

from 1997 he is committed to still life painting, consciously narrowing down the scope of the visual world. he deliberately chooses his subjects from his immediate surroundings. every day objects, not particularly interesting or beautiful objects, like table, chair, stepladder, paint can, hot plate with pan, piece of clothing, roll of canvas, wardrobe, bubble wrap, plastic bottles, computer, washing machine populate his canvases. in brooklyn, a  formerly industrial /packing district/ neighborhood emerging as a new art district called D.U.M.B.O /down under the manhattan bridge overpass/. halász rented a studio here and showed his still life paintings frequently within a program called open studios.

from 2002 on, halász shares his life between antwerpen and budapest and his latest works produced and shown in those cities /artist's studio, antwerpen, 2004; 1st floor gallery, antwerpen, 2005; boycott art gallery, brussels, 2006; start galéria, budapest, 2004 -2008/. 

recently he is teaching  in the hungarian university of fine art in budapest.
