> The problems and potentials of artificial intelligence are the subject of near-constant discussion at the moment, not least for how AI is impacting on art, now and in the future <https://artreview.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=59ee01dbbedc235439ec77a80&id=85261b0e7c&e=ddadd2f1c6>. In recent years artists have been both enthusiastic adopters of AI technologies and vocal critics of the implications of AI for human creativity, culture and society. Nonetheless, it seems – at this moment, at least – that the clankers are here to stay <https://artreview.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=59ee01dbbedc235439ec77a80&id=674b427e4a&e=ddadd2f1c6>, by invitation or otherwise.
>
> ArtReview invited five artists deeply involved with AI technologies – Avery Singer, Simon Denny, Holly Herndon, Mat Dryhurst and Jon Rafman <https://artreview.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=59ee01dbbedc235439ec77a80&id=cecae66511&e=ddadd2f1c6> – to discuss a simple question: where will art be, ‘post-AI’? <https://artreview.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=59ee01dbbedc235439ec77a80&id=8e283fdf30&e=ddadd2f1c6> Much like ‘postinternet art’ – which supposed that, after the internet, nothing in art could be the same again – ‘post-AI’ art is a slippery term to say the least. The goalposts are constantly moving, and with it our ability to understand our times. For Rafman, that’s the point: ‘Working with AI means living with constant change… AI reflects aspects of reality, and using it makes that more transparent.’
>
> But the mood is still sour <https://artreview.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=59ee01dbbedc235439ec77a80&id=2b24fcd8be&e=ddadd2f1c6>. While older tools – CGI, Photoshop, the internet: all earlier bastard children of artmaking – no longer provoke visceral reactions, AI still does. ‘The fact that they do,’ Denny notes, ‘tells you there’s something else going on. It’s threatening to people in a way that other tools aren’t <https://artreview.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=59ee01dbbedc235439ec77a80&id=066ab769fe&e=ddadd2f1c6>.’ If artists have long fought to control the narrative of their work, then it seems those working with AI face a tall order. Rightly so, says Singer: ‘Artists should be the ones to declare what burgeoning art movements they are active in.’
>
> That, ultimately, is the prevailing tone here: that in defiance of corporate takeover and AI slop, artists are looking to define the terms of engagement for themselves; to establish a context for their work, and therefore their world; and ‘context’, as Dryhurst points out, ‘establishes a cohort’.
