In recent years artists have been both enthusiastic adopters of AI technologies and vocal critics of the implications of AI for human creativity, culture and society. Nonetheless, it seems – at this moment, at least – that<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="https://artreview.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=59ee01dbbedc235439ec77a80&id=674b427e4a&e=ddadd2f1c6" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(84, 146, 185); font-weight: normal; text-decoration: underline;">the clankers are here to stay</a>, by invitation or otherwise.</span></span><br><br><span style="font-size: 14px;"><span style="font-family: merriweather, georgia, "times new roman", serif;"><em>ArtReview</em><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>invited five artists deeply involved with AI technologies –<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="https://artreview.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=59ee01dbbedc235439ec77a80&id=cecae66511&e=ddadd2f1c6" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(84, 146, 185); font-weight: normal; text-decoration: underline;">Avery Singer, Simon Denny, Holly Herndon, Mat Dryhurst and Jon Rafman</a><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>– to discuss a simple question:<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="https://artreview.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=59ee01dbbedc235439ec77a80&id=8e283fdf30&e=ddadd2f1c6" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(84, 146, 185); font-weight: normal; text-decoration: underline;">where will art be, ‘post-AI’?</a><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>Much like ‘postinternet art’ – which supposed that, after the internet, nothing in art could be the same again – ‘post-AI’ art is a slippery term to say the least. The goalposts are constantly moving, and with it our ability to understand our times. For Rafman, that’s the point: ‘Working with AI means living with constant change… AI reflects aspects of reality, and using it makes that more transparent.’</span></span><br><br><span style="font-size: 14px;"><span style="font-family: merriweather, georgia, "times new roman", serif;"><a href="https://artreview.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=59ee01dbbedc235439ec77a80&id=2b24fcd8be&e=ddadd2f1c6" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(84, 146, 185); font-weight: normal; text-decoration: underline;">But the mood is still sour</a>. While older tools – CGI, Photoshop, the internet: all earlier bastard children of artmaking – no longer provoke visceral reactions, AI still does. ‘The fact that they do,’ Denny notes, ‘tells you there’s something else going on.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="https://artreview.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=59ee01dbbedc235439ec77a80&id=066ab769fe&e=ddadd2f1c6" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(84, 146, 185); font-weight: normal; text-decoration: underline;">It’s threatening to people in a way that other tools aren’t</a>.’ If artists have long fought to control the narrative of their work, then it seems those working with AI face a tall order. Rightly so, says Singer: ‘Artists should be the ones to declare what burgeoning art movements they are active in.’ </span></span><br><br><span style="font-size: 14px;"><span style="font-family: merriweather, georgia, "times new roman", serif;">That, ultimately, is the prevailing tone here: that in defiance of corporate takeover and AI slop, artists are looking to define the terms of engagement for themselves;
