Csepel, a magyar főváros, Budapest egyik kerülete, ahol a rendszerváltás
után húsz évvel is a kommunista világ máig élő lenyomata látható. A 19.
század virágzó, világszínvonalú gépgyártó ipartelepének lassan lebomló
szigete, amely mára csendesen elrozsdásodott. Az iparos szellem és remények
kiveszése, a "vas és acél ország" mítoszának megfakulása emberek lakta
emlékhelyként konzerválta az egykori munkás öntudat fővárosi szimbólumát.
Tízezrek valamikori munka- és lakóhelyét - a békebeli ipari csarnokokat és
később hozzá nőtt panelrengeteget - sem a kilencvenes években elképzelt
olimpiai falu, sem egy remélt világkiállítás terve nem mentette meg. Aki
mégis maradt, az állandósult múlt idő ellenére maradt, a rég nem világító
neon vörös csillag árnyékában.

 Dániel Kovalovszky: Memory Factory

 Csepel is a district of Budapest, where even 20 years after the political
changes the influence of the communist era can still be felt. The
slowly-decaying island of a once (in the 19th century) prospering
machine-building industrial plant has quietly rusted away. The disappearance
of industrial spirit and hope, the fading of the myth of "the country of
iron and steel" has conserved the capital's former symbol of workers'
consciousness as a still inhabited memorial place. The former workplace and
home of tens of thousands of people - with huge industrial halls and a vast
field of blocks of flats - could not be saved either by the Olympic village
planned in the 1990s or by the plans of a desired world exhibition. Those
who stayed, nevertheless, stayed in spite of the permanence of the past - in
the shadow of the long burned-out neon red star.
