Nihad Nino Pušija Boszniában született; a nyolcvanas években újságírónak
tanult a

szarajevói egyetemen. Szabadúszó fotósként járta be Angliát, Belgiumot,
Olaszországot és Amerikát, majd 1992-ben Berlinben telepedett le. A berlini
NGBK (Neue Gesellshaft für Bildende Kunst) és a Kunstamt Kreuzberg
támogatásában működő "Zyklop foto fabrik" vezetője; a Zyklop olyan fiatal
fotóművészekből áll, akiknek a jugoszláv háború miatt kellett félbehagyniuk
tanulmányaikal.

Nino az idei Velencei Biennálén először bemutatkozó Roma Pavilon kiállító
művésze. 2006 októberében a budapesti 2B Galéria „We are what we are"
kiállításán mutatta be képeit; az Amaro Drom tavalyi májusi számában
készített vele interjút:

„Tudatos döntés részemről, hogy az elmúlt tizenöt év során Berlinben élek és
dolgozom. Nincs még egy olyan metropolisz a világon, ahol két korábban
kettéosztott fél próbál újra összenőni – ahol a korábbi Keleti és Nyugati
Blokk megosztottsága és hasonlósága egyszerre van jelen. Egyedülálló
lehetőség ez, hogy egy ilyen átmeneti időszakban és helyen szabadon
navigálhat a művész, s Berlin számos mikrokozmoszát folytonosan változó
folyamatokként élheti át. Róluk készített képeimen a városlakók az események
hordozóiként jelennek meg.

A fotó mint műfaj az identitás és az önkép (újra-)felépítését szolgálja. Ez
egyszerre érvényes azokra, akiket fényképezek és magamra is, a magam
szerepére és tapasztalataira ebben az átalakulási folyamatban. Egyre
fontosabb számomra, hogy rátaláljak azokra a stratégiákra, amelyekkel  a
tapasztalataimat közvetíteni tudom.

Célom tehát az, hogy felfedezzem a létező mikrovilágokat ott, ahol élek,
hogy az apró változásokat és az alig is észlelhető jelenségeket ragadjam
meg, hogy az elkészülő képek a mindennapi környezetemre és életemre
vonatkozó gyakori általánosításokkal dacoljanak."

*Nihad Nino Pušija* was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina; studied
journalism at the University of Sarajevo. He traveled around England,
Belgium, Italy and USA as a freelance photographer. In 1992 he settled in
Berlin where he is the project leader of  "Zyklop foto fabrik" (Cyclops
photo factory), a group of young artists who had to abandon their studies
because of the war in former Yugoslavia.

Nino is one of the exhibiting artists of the Roma Pavilion to be organised
for the first time this year at the Venice Biennial. He showed his
photographs last October at the 2B Gallery in Budapest, and the journal
Amaro Drom published an interview with him last May:

"For the last fifteen years, I have consciously chosen to live and
photograph in Berlin. There is no other metropolis in the world in which two
divided halves are trying to grow back together. Nowhere else can you find
both the division, and the merging, between the East Block and West Block.
In this time and place of transition, I have the unique opportunity to move
around as an artist, exploring Berlin's microcosms like its streets, food
stands and even park benches, as change in progress. Through my eyes, as a
foreigner, and with the tool of artistic photography, the faces of the
inhabitants become projections of the events.

Photography is used as a medium to (re)gain one's identity and self-image.
This is true for the subjects I capture, as well as for my own experience
and role within this societal process of transition. It becomes increasingly
important for me to find strategies and approaches to communicate my own
experiences as part of the whole and make them heard.

People and their unique personal stories are at the center of attention in
portrait photography series at the turn of this century. These photographs
of individuals become defining docu­mentaries for whole groups of people.

It is my artistic goal to seek out microcosms, here, where I live and work,
capturing the small changes and holding on to the unassuming, so that the
resulting series of photographs will defy the vague generalizations of my
surroundings and daily life."
