Kuenstlerhaeuser Worpswede

The Kuenstlerhaeuser Worpswede are one of the
largest residencies in the Federal Republic of
Germany. Since 1971, over 400 artists from more
than 30 countries have been invited as guests.
Among former grant holders are many noted artists
such as Emmett Williams, Koeken Ergun, Yuri
Leiderman, Dan Perjovschi, Katharina Sieverding or Egill Saebjoernsson.

The Kuenstlerhaeuser Worpswede are supported by
the Barkenhoff Stiftung, Worpswede, and the
private initiative Atelierhaus e. V., which
collectively make the studios available. The
grant body is also supported by the state of
Lower Saxony through the award of a monthly grant of €1,400.

Grant holders in the fields of the fine arts and
sound art work in a total of 10 studios between
40 and 115 m2 for a period of 3 6 months. In
the year 2007, a grant has been awarded to:
Nandor Angstenberger, Diego Castro, Dani Gal,
Stella Geppert, Matthias Meyer, Skafte Kuhn,
Rindfleisch/Rapedius, Antje Schiffers, Ernst
Stark, and Herma Auguste Wittstock (fine arts);
Boris Baltschun, Jakub Sarwas, and Florian Wittenburg (sound).

Since October 2006, the Kuenstlerhaeuser have
been undergoing a process of repositioning,
focussing on lasting artists’ support as well as
artistic and cultural exchange. Besides the
regular presentation of works produced in the
studios both within and outside Worpswede, there
are also, on a discursive level, artists’
discussions, workshops and symposia on artists’
support, which take place at the Barkenhoff.

Collaboration with universities and art schools
has become increasingly important. A series of
editions have been developed with the grant
holders of the Kuenstlerhaeuser in cooperation
with the School of Art and Design, Zurich, and
shown in a mobile exhibition space with stations
in Worpswede, Bremen, Kassel and Zurich.
Temporary guest-residencies should build up a
network of curators, galerists and art critics.
This year’s winner of the German AdKV Art Critics
Award, Ludwig Seyfahrt, for example, spent an
intensive two weeks on site engaging with the work of the grant holders.

The Kuenstlerhaeuser also maintain contact with
former grant holders. A typical example is this
year’s exhibition “worpswunder” in the Kunstverein Springhornhof, Neuenkirchen.

A broad spectrum of events make the
Kuenstlerhaeuser Worpswede into a dynamic site of
cultural production, presentation, and active encounters with contemporary art.
