"My presentation at the Ernst Museum in June 2006 as part of the Speaker's Series on Minority Art" focused on my recent book project 'Defying Liminality' : Cuban Artists in the Diaspora. This project focuses upon a particular group of Cuban diasporic and what I refer to as heritage artists (artists born or raised up in diaspora) who have participated in an ongoing, multi-generational and multi-media traveling exhibit titled: Café : The Journeys of Cuban Artists (curated by leandro Soto). Given the particular socio-political context from which this study springs, 'Defying Liminality' is centrally concerned with the fundamental relationship between the visual cultural expressions of both individuals and groups and a national tradition of cultural resistance. In the eyes of the Cuban intelligentsia of the 1920-1930' cultural self-affirmation became a critical aspect of decolonization and art was as one critic has observed a powerful nation-buliding tool and an essential component of post-colonial identity formation"
