DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS IS 11TH MARCH 2005 !!!
INTRODUCTION
Braziers International Artists' Workshop is an annual event, established in 1995. It is an artist-run, nonprofit-making initiative unique in the UK that provides a creative arena for artists who are ambitious for their work and open to the challenges of an environment that demands experiment, co-operation and exchange.
Braziers Workshop removes artists geographically and conceptually from their usual studio practice and brings them together to work in a way that is mutually beneficial, contributing to a developing international dialogue that explores our cultural and parochial differences whilst celebrating our commonality.
Since 1995, more than 150 artists from Africa, Australia, Central Asia, Europe, India, North and South America have taken part, working in a variety of disciplines and media: time-based, photographic, film/video, new media, installation, painting and sculpture.
Braziers has a powerful and enduring effect on an artist's working practice.
. Providing a focused period of time in which to make work
. Being about process and not end product
. Allowing artists to take risks and re-evaluate their practice
. Challenging and changing perceptions
. Encouraging collaboration and co-operation
. Generating international dialogue and contacts
. Providing new opportunities for those taking part, including residencies and exhibitionsLOCATION
The workshop takes place at Braziers Park, a residential college in Oxfordshire on the edge of the Chiltern Hills. The 17th Century mansion house is set in 50 acres of park and farmland dotted with numerous outbuildings and barns. Each artist is allocated a space in one of the outbuildings. This can be used either as studio space in which to make work or as a base from which to make site-specific work in and around the extensive grounds or house.
All meals, accommodation and studio space are provided along with technical support and facilities.
STRUCTURE
Artists are resident for the duration of the 17-day workshop and can choose to camp or stay in the house.
A series of artists, performers, writers and critics are invited to attend throughout the workshop to encourage critical debate and dialogue. This will include presentations, lectures and studio visits. Whilst the emphasis is placed firmly upon work in progress, the final Sunday (21st August) will be open to the public and fellow artists to visit the studios and view the work.
FUNDING
The Workshop has received funding from the Arts Council of England, Visiting Arts, and other private individuals and organisations. We hope to offer all the selected artists fully funded places excluding their travel to and from the workshop. Artists, especially those from outside the UK, are encouraged to seek financial help for their travel through national or regional funding organisations, charitable trusts, British Council etc.
