De Appel Foundation is one of the Netherlands’
leading art institutes, dedicated to presenting a
wide range of projects, installations and
research from the world of contemporary art.
Since being founded in 1975, De Appel has built
up an international reputation in spotting and
introducing the latest trends in contemporary
art. It invites the public to engage in
reflection, confrontation and criticism and
strives to foster a climate of interest and
comprehension in their approach to new art forms.
De Appel also offers young curators the
opportunity to participate in the annual
Curatorial Training Programme (CTP). As a lookout
post for international developments, De Appel
makes an important contribution to today’s
discourse on contemporary art and visual culture.
De Appel will be searching for a new general director as of 1 January 2006.
Job description
The board is searching for an enthusiastic
director who is fully engaged in the art world –
someone with vision who is prepared to determine
the artistic profile of De Appel’s exhibition
policy and to take on responsibility for the
CTP’s selection and content. The director is also
responsible for organisational management and
personnel.
Profile
The director has a clear vision of the content of
De Appel’s artistic programme and is gifted with
outstanding analytical, communicative and social
skills. He/she acts as a source of inspiration
for artists, personnel, board members and fellow
professionals. The director is also expected to
maintain a broad international network and to
serve as De Appel’s ambassador. The ability to
communicate fluently in English is essential, and
a good mastery of other foreign languages will be
looked upon favourably as a valuable asset.
The director is responsible for embarking upon
and strengthening De Appel’s prominent position
at both national and international level. The
director has the ability to view the
professionalization of the art sector from a
strategic vantage point, and has demonstrable
knowledge and experience in organizational
management. The director examines the possibility
of entering into partnerships and alliances that
could expand De Appel’s level of support from
society at large as well as broadening its
financial base. He/she is also a person who shows
initiative and recognizes the importance of
appealing to a diverse public.
Conditions of employment
This is a full-time, 5-year position with the
possibility of reappointment. The salary level
will be determined by mutual agreement and is
dependent on the candidate’s demonstrable
experience.
The board looks forward to receiving applications
(in the English language, in consideration of the
international character of the selection
committee) accompanied by a CV and a statement of
personal motivation. Candidates are invited to
present their personal vision and future plans
for De Appel.
The board would very much appreciate being made
aware of any candidates who may qualify for this
function.
