Tihany International Postgraduate Program
GOLDSMITHS COLLEGE, LONDON - HUNGARIAN ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS

OVERLAP SYMPOSIUM
4-11 July 2004

SYMPOSIUM STATEMENT
TIPP's first international symposium will explore the issues, discourse and
duplicity of the artist/curator. The aim of this program is to investigate
this relationship and how it affects the making and showing of contemporary
art. The debate around the process of curating has again become prevalent.
It is no longer enough to curate from the safety of the museum office, or to
make art alone in the studio, although both still function as important
sites. Rather it seems to have become crucial for both artists and curators
to enter into a kind of cross fertilisation. To understand these processes,
perhaps we should look at where these multifaceted approaches originate,
investigate the origins of how artist projects have shaped curatorial
initiatives and how curatorial initiatives have encouraged artists'
projects. In order to clarify some of these questions TIPP has invited
individuals from across the spectrum to discuss areas of overlap. The
symposium based at Tihany will bring together internationally known
practitioners to present papers and participate in discussions with the aim
of creating a clearer understanding of both the historical and contemporary
context of the artist/curator. Every morning for a week there will be a
lecture followed by discussion. The lectures will focus on the personal
histories and experiences of the invited speakers. Particular to this is the
investigative process of how we look at and present artwork. How does the
process of making art transfer into the cross-relational context of the
gallery and the public space? In the afternoons, invited artists from
Hungary will have the opportunity to present their work in an informal
setting of slideshow and video projections. Finally and most importantly the
Symposium will present practical examples for artists/curators in the form
of events.

an introduction to a cross section of Hungarian artists' work that includes
video, painting, sculpture and other conceptual excursions into current fine
art practice. Invited artists include Attila Csörgö, Szabolcs KissPál,
János Sugár, Lola Kovács and many others. A complete list of the invited

video and film work from around the world. A complete list of work shown as
part of our Video Nights programme will be available on our web-site.

TIPP
Tihany International Postgraduate Program
GOLDSMITHS COLLEGE, LONDON - HUNGARIAN ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS

TIPP - Tihany International Postgraduate Program is an international
collaborative research initiative between the Visual Arts Department at
Goldsmiths College, London and the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts. The
program includes symposiums, intensive courses, conferences,
artist-in-residencies, exhibitions and other events as well as the
production of publications. Our aim is to create an international forum for
artists to explore the creative diversity of contemporary fine art practice
and the nature of the critical discourse, which surrounds it. As Hungary
has been a crossroads between the East and West for hundreds of years, its
accession this spring to the European Union places it again at the heart of
the reunited Europe. Recognising these changes we feel that part of TIPP's
role is in providing a forum where people from different nationalities and
ethnicity's may participate in a number of challenging Fine Art based
programs. The programs are situated at the newly renovated premises of the
Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts in Tihany, where participants have the
opportunity to experience art, theory and debate away from its usual urban
environment. In locating TIPP this way, a uniquely open atmosphere is
created. From experience we have found that the opportunity for more relaxed
social interaction between participants directly contributes to freer
expression and sharing of ideas and a more open forum for debate.
