International one year paintig course
Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts, Budapest

Designed for students of all nationalities. The instruction aims at giving 
students the necessary tools for mastering their field, assisting them to 
find their own personal language in painting, and teaching them to examine 
their own work in the context of both tradition and contemporary art.

Programme of the course
The programme comprises individual tutorials, independent studio work, 
workshops and discussions. The course is based on traditional academic 
artistic studies, the main classes being: drawing, painting, artistic 
anatomy and traditional painting techniques.
Students will be offered possibilities to attend courses in other 
departments of the institute.
The painting department will provide the students with basic materials.
The language of teaching is German and English.

Support services include a library and several exhibition spaces within the 
Academy. Participants will be provided a student card (reduced price for 
public transport, admission to museums) and sports facilities are also 
available.

Schedule of the academic year: autumn semester: end of September - 20 
December, winter break:  December 20 - January 3, examination period: 
January, spring semester: 1 February - 20 May (one week Easter break), 
examination period: June

Admission and application:
Admission is open to both Hungarian and foreign nationals. The application 
procedure is free. Application documents must include a curriculum vitae, 
copy of the final exam certificate (or equivalent), a brief essay stating 
the student’s motivations, an artistic portfolio, and a passport photo. 
Candidates are chosen on the strength of their application. The final 
selection will be made by a curatorium and will take place on 13 August 
2003 and . Applicants will be informed on the decision in writing.

Context
The Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts, the most important and longest-standing 
art institution in Hungray, provides the highest level of training in all 
areas of fine art, and is an examplary institution in the region. One of 
the main attractions of the Academy is the fact that besides incorporating 
new media into the curriculum, it continues teaching traditional artistic 
techniques and methods offering courses like artistic anatomy and 
traditional drawing practice.
The central building is located on the most elegant avenue of Pest 
connecting the Danube with the City park. The other main site, Epreskert 
(Mulberry Garden), where the international painting course will be 
situated, is only a few minutes from the main building and comprises 
numerous sudios and specialised workshops.
