4. New Training for Museum Professionals in UK

Museum professionals from across the UK are to converge on the
University of Leicester for an exciting new training initiative that
will enable them to make more creative and informed use of new
technologies within their organisations.
The University's Department of Museum Studies, in partnership with mda
and supported by Resource, will be running a three-day course in March
providing new media training for museum professionals.
Resource, the Council for museums, archives and libraries is the
leading, government-funded organisation that works with and for museums,
archives and libraries within the UK. mda is at the forefront of
promoting and supporting information management within the cultural
sector.

5. Book of the month: The Manual of Museum Planning

This handbook by Gary Dexter Lord and Barry Lord is one of the best basic
books for museums professionals. With the second edition, the editors were
succeeded in expanding an already rich publication with new chapters about
new developments like visitor research, fundraising questions or informatio=
n
technologies. Well-recognized authors from various countries have given
their contributions, so the book is helpful not only for the American, but
also for the European or Australian reality of museum management.
This working manual covers such questions as the diversity of communities,
the importance of knowing the market, understanding the needs of museum's
visitors, fund raising, site selection methods, and the role of director,
staff, trustees and local authority.
Of course the personal library of the administration staff in museums shoul=
d
be completed with specific publications about marketing, communication or
fundraising, but this manual is likely the best overview.

7. Introduced: Museum Management and Curatorship

This international forum for Museum Professionals has established itself as
a formidable force amongst museum periodicals, providing authoritative,
up-to-date and independent consideration of key issues in the field.
In recent years, concepts of management within museums have changed
dramatically. With greater specialization and increased professionalism has
come a growing recognition of the importance of sound curatorship. Museum
Management and Curatorship provides unrivalled coverage of subjects vital t=
o
the future provision of museum services, including: the archival function o=
f
museums - conservation for future generations as well as collecting
object-based knowledge; application and development of new techniques of
conservation and display; and the theoretical, social and cultural bases of
museums.
