>> Journalism, of course, can criticize a dance—or, to put it more kindly, “review” it. In reality, however, what you read and see in the media much more often is just the advance announcement of a dance work. In other words: Journalism does marketing. But journalism can do much more than that. For example, it can assess the significance of how dance exists in this society—or rather, how it tries to survive. That’s why journalism also serves to offer high-quality reporting on dance. tanz.dance <https://dd36k.r.sp1-brevo.net/mk/cl/f/sh/1t6Af4OiGsDg0cCzTLZHjNBXesjevH/aeLmoz2IW3T7> is an international reporting forum that looks beyond the horizon, that touches or even shocks, and that is written and illustrated in such an exciting way as to enable it to actually take a stand on the issues it addresses. Like the story presented here.

>> This story takes place in Hungary and begins with a question: What actually happens when politics takes control of dance? Nowhere is the answer as crystal clear as in Hungary. Although the country is—still—a member of the European Union, Hungary's leader Orbán and his Fidesz party are doing their utmost to spread a narrative about the nation that is determined solely by them, in which the arts must participate or forego any form of support. Of course, these practices also exist elsewhere—in Russia, Turkey, and Vietnam, for example. Either dance is grossly trivialized and portrayed as unimportant or it is put at the service of national propaganda. However, what is really interesting about this report from Budapest, thoroughly researched by Ingeborg Zachariassen and opulently photographed by Gergely Ofner, is something else: Much of what those affected say in this report could also be expressed in a similar way in liberal democracies. That is frightening. And it gives pause for thought.

>> The tanz.dance <https://dd36k.r.sp1-brevo.net/mk/cl/f/sh/1t6Af4OiGsEag2bqG3l83tJCQWh8LP/HXPe_DCQRYGx> platform has already gained a measure of respect in its fifth year thanks to the importance it places on research. This project has identified an audience that is convinced that research and reporting are the catalysts that fuel real interest in this art form. That’s why we’re now doing something we've never done before:

That's why, in addition to this compelling report from Hungary, there is also Dieter Jaenicke’s wonderfully researched story, photographed by Pedro Martins Valle Costa, about the origins of the legendary Baile Charme <https://dd36k.r.sp1-brevo.net/mk/cl/f/sh/1t6Af4OiGsFVLT0h2lwyOPQrCAeblX/43RbrjRh42Sl> from Rio de Janeiro as the mother of all social dance. And then there’s this bestseller: the Perpetual European Dance Festival Calendar <https://dd36k.r.sp1-brevo.net/mk/cl/f/sh/1t6Af4OiGsFxgBD7R82tYfUgZzdLTb/Unwp6b6ocfRj>, which lists all the important festivals in Europe and neighboring countries. The calendar is an invaluable tool for companies that make a living from touring and for everyone who—at least since Ingeborg Zachariassen’s report from Budapest—describes freedom of travel as their most important means of survival, away from all dependencies on political goodwill.
