Thanks Brian and Keith and Louis and Patrice,
What has been terribly absent in this discussion is some historical context; one place to start is with the Balfour Declaration which begins to clarify the colonial manipulations of the British. The British were playing with Arab and Zionist leaders. Not Jewish leaders, mind you. And they were making all kinds of promises that reneged on or modified (sound familiar?). T.E. Lawrence provides some insight on the British machinations.
Zionism is a political ideology (not a religion) which is why there are Christian Zionist as well as Jewish. It is a supremacist ideology, like the Nazi's Aryanism or Modi's Hinduism (and others as well). And why do we find so many eugenicist ideologues attached to Trump as foot servants and minions? Autocracies come in all sizes and shapes; Mussolini and Hitler had their own playbooks which overlapped in many areas. Just as Netanyahu and Trump have different but overlapping agendas.
Even though there was ample evidence of Nazi atrocities it took the Allies a number of years to act on what was happening; and bomb the train lines that fed the concentration camps? Genocide can be staring you in the face but one can feel incapable of doing anything about it. As far as I can tell Palestine Action is trying to do something that calls attention to the genocide in Gaza and for that their actions they are criminalized. As opposed to the various Western governments who are simply keep supplying bombs and enabling genocide..
And finally, would you call the inmates of Treblinka terrorists for burning down their concentration camp? Maybe they should have apologized to the other inmates who were inconvenienced by their actions. Huh, Nina? Oliver, I would recommend Hannah Arendt's book Eichmann in Jerusalem to provide you with some historical background.
And yes, sometimes you have to take sides.
best
allan
