A LUK ezúttal az avantgárd brit filmes, John 
Smith egyik legmeghatározóbb munkáját mutatja be. 
A rágózó lány a Magyarországon kevéssé ismert 
alkotó korai, 1976-ban készült, eredetileg 
16mm-es filmre forgatott, 12 perces filmje. 
Szürke hétköznap egy forgalmas londoni utcán. A 
két kameraállásból felvett jelenetsor a rendez‘ 
hangalámondása hatására a szemünk láttára válik 
teljesen illuzórikussá.

John Smith több mint harminc éve készíti filmjeit 
és videomunkáit, melyeket a nem lineáris 
történetvezetésen kívül sajátos formanyelv és 
humor jellemez. Munkásságára, amiben kiemelt 
hangsúllyal jelenik meg a cselekmény és a 
kimondott szó közti összefüggés, kezdett‘l fogva 
hatott a konceptuális mžvészet és a stukturalista 
film. Munkáiban elmosódik a határ dokumentum és 
fikció, leképezés és absztrakció között. 
Hétköznapi helyzetekb‘l kiinduló, aprólékosan 
kidolgozott filmjeiben Smith úgy szabja át a 
valóságot, hogy közben játékosan egyszerre fedezi 
fel és leplezi le a filmes nyelvet.

LOOK is proud to announce the screening of one of 
the early and most influential films of 
avant-guard British filmmaker John Smith. The 
Girl Chewing Gum is capturing the comings and 
goings of a busy street corner on a gray day in 
Hackney, London in 1976. It is Smith's voiceover 
that transforms the documented incidental events 
into something fictional and constructed.

Known for their formal ingenuity, wit, and 
oblique storytelling, John Smith's films have 
been widely shown internationally for over 30 
years. Initially inspired by conceptual art and 
structural film, but also fascinated by the 
immersive power of narrative and the spoken word, 
Smith has developed an extensive body of work 
that blurs the boundaries between documentary and 
fiction, representation and abstraction. Often 
rooted in everyday life, his meticulously crafted 
films rework and transform reality, playfully 
exploring and exposing the language of cinema.
