ENCAC Open Call for 6 Audiovisual Residencies

ENCAC (European Network for Contemporary Audiovisual Creation) has launched
its second open call, this time supporting six research and/or production
residencies:

→ DISK Berlin / CTM Festival (Berlin, November 2016)
→ humainTROPhumain (Montpellier, December 2016)
→ LABoral / L.E.V Festival (Gijón, January & April 2017)
→ Avatar (Quebec City, April 2017)
→ le lieu unique (Nantes, May 2017)

The call searches for creative and innovative artistic projects and
research within the fields and at the cross-sections of sound, visuals,
music, performing arts and digital culture. The call is open to artists
worldwide. *Application deadline: 15 June at 23h (GMT+1).*

2000 USD Raised for Chelsea Manning

Thanks to collaboration with *Metahaven*, *Holly Herndon*, *Mathew Dryhurst*,
and *transmediale*, we were able to support the courageous whistleblower
Chelsea Manning by *donating 2000 $ to the Chelsea Manning support fund*,
resulting from the sales of an edition of T-shirts designed by Metahaven.
The shirts were first produced on the occasion of our Polymorphism night
with Holly last May at Berghain, and will soon again be available via the
CTM online shop, and at our next festival edition and other events.

In the meantime, we highly recommend the "Whistleblower und Vigilanten.
Figuren des digitalen Widerstandes" exhibiton at Dortmund's Hartware
MedienKunstVerein. A limited number of shirts are on sale there!

HKW x CTM Technosphärenklänge Series Continues

Ever since Pythagoras’s monochord experiments, mathematics have radically
expanded our understanding of and the possibilities for producing and
experiencing sound. At the same time music has a particularly intense
effect when it exhibits qualities that are mathematically unpredictable.
The second edition of *Technosphärenklänge* takes a look at the
electrifying interconnections of music, mathematics and technology.

For the first time ever, the Russian musician and researcher *Andrey
Smirnov* presents a piece on the original *Rhythmicon*, the world’s first
electric rhythm machine, invented by *Leon Theremin* in 1931. For another
world premiere, *John Chowning*, a pioneer of electronic music, influential
teacher and, as the inventor of frequency modulation synthesis, one of the
trailblazers of today’s ubiquitous digital sound technology, meets *Mark
Fell*, an outstanding protagonist of algorithmic music. *Marcus
Schmickler *explores
numbers as mutual objects of music and mathematics in a collaboration with
artist *Carsten Goertz*. Based on Shepard-Risset glissandos, their "Fortuna
Ribbons" piece plays with the foundations of musical practice and sound
perceptions. The Berlin project* gamut inc* takes media-archeological
approaches to develop new music machines.

The programme is complemented by a day of talks and lectures on April 22
with and by the above artists and with *Holly Herndon* and *Peter Kirn*.
Entrance to the talks is free.

The Technosphärenklänge (Sounds of the Technosphere) concert series aims to
explore current practices in sound and music as an element and expression
of the technosphere. Developed in close collaboration between *HKW* and CTM
Festival, the series is scheduled to take place at irregular intervals
until 2018.

CTM Returns to Intonal Festival

Following a successful launch in 2015, CTM is pleased to return to Malmö’s
Inkonst international art center together with longtime partner Unsound, to
partake in the second edition of the Intonal festival with local partners
Elektronmusikstudion (EMS) Stokholm and Malmö’s Inter Arts Center (IAC).

Matmos — Ultimate Care II

On *1 June* at *Berghain*, Matmos

return for their first concert in Berlin since CTM 2013, to present their
newest album, *Ultimate Care II* (Thrill Jockey). The idea to make an album
entirely out of the sounds of a washing machine came to Matmos’ Martin
Schmidt as he drummed his fingers on the Whirlpool Ultimate Care II in his
home studio, lost in abstracted contemplation of its cyclical rhythms.
Presented as one continuous track, the album is 38 minutes long, exactly
the length of one wash cycle.

Supporting the evening is ascendent Swedish composer Klara Lewis

supported by the 2016 *SHAPE platform*, whose debut album *Ett* was
released by the venerable Editions Mego label in 2014 and was widely

the electronic music spectrum. Her second full lenght album *Too* will come
out on Editions Mego this May, and we can't wait to get a hold of a copy.

The Berlin based Cosmo Rhythmatic

label joins forces with CTM Festival and Berghain to present its first
showcase on *Friday 10 June*. Curated by *Shapednoise* with D. Carbone and
Ascion, the label will celebrate a new release by *Grischa Lichtenberger*
and Canadian multidisciplinary artist *Jesse Osborne-Lanthier*, while
featuring other affiliated artists: *Mika Vainio & Franck Vigroux*, plus
Shapednoise himself in collaboration with visual artist *sYn*, and with a
DJ-set. Live appearances by *Container* (Spectrum Spools, Morphine Records)
and *Xosar* (Gyrocyre, Opal Tapes, L.I.E.S.) plus a DJ set by Golden
Pudel’s *Nina* chisels out a night of sonic intensities.

Das *ENCAC (European Network for Contemporary Audiovisual Creation)*, zu
dem CTM gehört, hat gerade seine neue Ausschreibung veröffentlicht. In
einem offen *Call for Proposals* werden sechs hochkarätige Forschungs-
und/oder Produktions-Residenzen für Künstler, die an audiovisuellen
Performances und Installationen arbeiten, an folgenden Einrichtungen
vergeben:

Aus dem Verkauf der in Zusammenarbeit mit *Metahaven*, *Holly Herndon*, *Mathew
Dryhurst* und dem *transmdiale Festival* produzierten T-Shirts für Chelsea
Manning konnten wir mittlerweile die Whistleblowerin Chelsea Manning mit
einer Spende von *2.000 US-Dollar an den Chelsea Manning Support Fund*
unterstützen. Die T-Shirts entstanden anlässlich unserer
Polymorphism-Nachtmit Holly Herndon im vergangenen Mai im Berghain. Eine
neue Auflage der Shirts wird bald wieder über den CTM Online Shop, bei der
nächsten Festivalausgabe und anderen Veranstaltungen erhältlich sein.

Sehr zu empfehlen ist außerdem die *Ausstellung Whistleblower und
Vigilanten. Figuren des digitalen Widerstands* im Hartware
Medienkunstverein, Dortmund. Eine limitierte Anzahl der T-Shirts ist dort
ebenfalls erhältlich.

HKW x CTM Technosphärenklänge

*Technosphärenklänge #2* präsentiert Konzerte, Talks und Vorträge zur
historischen Koevolution von Musik, Mathematik und Technik: zwei
Uraufführungen, die welterste Drum-Machine, Frequenzmodulationssynthese
meets algorithmische Musik, eine Echtzeit-Sonifikation der Wellenbewegungen
an verschiedenen Stränden der Welt, neuartige elektro-akustische
Musikmaschinen und vieles mehr.

Der russische Musiker und Forscher *Andrey Smirnov* präsentiert erstmals
ein Stück mit dem originalen „Rhythmicon“, jener von Leon Theremin 1932
erfundenen, bahnbrechenden elektronischen Rhythmusmaschine, die heute als
Vorläufer der Drum-Machine gilt. * John Chowning*, prägender Pionier
elektronischer Musik, wirkreicher Lehrer und als Erfinder der FM Synthese
einer der Wegbereiter heute allgegenwärtiger digitaler Klangtechnik, trifft
in einer weiteren Weltpremiere auf *Mark Fell*, einen der herausragenden
Protagonisten algorithmischer Musik.* Marcus Schmickler* und *Carsten
Goertz* erkunden den Klang mathematischer Operationen anhand
psychoakustischer Effekte. Ausgehend von Shepard-Risset-Glissandos spielt
"Fortuna Ribbons" mit den Fundamenten musikalischer Praxis und klanglicher
Wahrnehmung. Das Berliner Projekt *gamut inc* kombiniert
medienarchäologische Recherche zu vormodernen Musikexperimenten mit den
Möglichkeiten aktueller Technologie für die Entwicklung neuartiger hybrider
Musikautomaten.

Das Programm wird tagsüber, am 22. April, um Talks und Vorlesungen ergänzt.
Neben den oben genannten Künstlern werden daran außerdem* Holly Herndon*
und *Peter Kirn* teilnehmen. Ausserdem zeigt Yuri Suzuki seine
Klanginstallation "The Sound of the Waves". Der Eintritt zu den
Diskussionsveranstaltungen und zur Installation ist kostenlos.

CTM ko-kuratiert Intonal Festival

Nach dem erfolgreichen Start 2015 freut sich CTM zusammen mit dem
langjährigen Partnerfestival Unsound in Malmös internationales Kunstzentrum
Inkonst zurückzukehren, um dort mit den schwedischen Partnern
Elektronmusikstudion (EMS) Stockholm und Inter Arts Center (IAC) Malmö an
der zweiten Ausgabe des Intonal Festivals teilzunehmen. Musikalisch bewegt
sich das abwechslungsreiche Programm zwischen abstrakten Klangexperimenten

Polymorphism # 17 — Tim Hecker, Wolf Eyes, We Will Fail

Die erste Polymorphism-Veranstaltung 2016 findet am Donnerstag den *12. Mai*
im *Berghain* statt.

*Tim Hecker*, bekannt für seine tiefschürfende Erkundung der Überlagerung
von Noise, Dissonanz und Melodie in mitreißend ausgeklügelteten
Drone-Performances, kehrt nach Berlin zurück, um sein neues Album *Love
Streams* vorzustellen, das am 8. April auf dem Label 4AD erschienen ist.
Der in Berlin lebende Künstler Marcel Weber, aka *MFO*, wird mit einer das
Publikum umgebenden Lichtinstallation das Konzert atmosphärisch und
dramaturgisch verstärken.

Den musikalischen Gegenentwurf präsentieren an diesem Abend *Wolf Eyes* aus
Michigan. Ihre Konzerte versprechen nicht weniger als „reine klangliche
Wucht, handgemachten postnuklearen Terror und klaustrophobische Atmosphären
– die kaputteste und verwirrendste Horrorvision seit Bo Diddley den
Gaffer-Tape-umklebten Gefechtskopf 2024 auf die Menschheit fallen ließ.“

*We Will Fail*, eine in 2016 durch die *SHAPE Plattform* unterstützten
Künstlerinnen, präsentiert Material von ihrem kommenden Album auf
MonotypeRec vorstellen. Ihre Musik ist schwer zu klassifizieren. Da der
Rhythmus im Mittelpunkt steht, werden schnell parallelen zu Techno und
Clubmusik gezogen, die Künstlerin ist jedoch der Meinung, dass sich ihre
Musik besser zum Zuhören als zum Tanzen eignet.

Matmos — Ultimate Care II

*Matmos* kommen am 1. Juni ins Berghain, um ihr erstes Berlin-Konzert seit
dem hervorragenden CTM-Eröffnungskonzert 2013 zu spielen. Dabei
präsentieren sie ihr neues Album *Ultimate Care II* (Thrill Jockey). Die
Idee, ein Album komplett aus Klängen einer Waschmaschine zu machen, kam
M.C. Schmidt, als er, kontemplativ in die zyklischen Rhythmik seiner
Whirlpool Ultimate Care II versunken, mit seinen Fingern auf einer Maschine
trommelte. Das brilliante, nur aus einem Track bestehende Album hat
konsequenter Weise eine Spielzeit von 38 Minuten und dauert damit genau so
lang wie ein Waschgang.

Zuvor spielt die schwedische Komponistin *Klara Lewis*, die von 2016 von
der *SHAPE Plattform* unterstüzt wird. Ihr Debütalbum, *Ett*, erschien 2014
auf dem allerseits geschätzten Label Editions Mego  und schaffte es  prompt
in zahlreiche Jahresendbestenlisten. Ihr zweites Album erscheint im Mai bei
wiederum bei Editions Mego und wir können es kaum erwarten, unsere Exemplar
in den Händen zu halten.

Polymorphism # 18 — CTM x Cosmo Rhythmatic

Das in Berlin ansässige Label Cosmo Rhythmatic

macht an diesem Abend gemeinsame Sache mit CTM Festival und Berghain, um
seinen ersten Showcase zu präsentieren. Das von *Shapednoise*, D.Carbone
und Ascion kuratierte Label wird eine gemeinsame Veröffentlichung von *Grischa
Lichtenberger* und dem kanadischen Künstler *Jesse Osborne-Lanthier*
feiern, aber auch andere Künstler aus dem Labeldunstkreis dürfen natürlich
nicht fehlen: *Mika Vainio & Franck Vigroux*, sowie Shapednoise persönlich
in einer Kollaboration mit dem Videokünstler *sYn* sowie mit einem DJ-Set.
Live-Auftritte von *Container *(Spectrum Spools, Morphine Records) und
*Xosar* (Gyrocyre, Opal Tapes, L.I.E.S.), sowie ein DJ-Set von Golden Pudel
Resident *Nina* runden das Paket ab. Intensität pur.
