I just write a poem then everything will be fine

2022. február 10-ig
„Sem itt, sem ott: a melankólia a kettő közötti repedésből támad életre. Sötét folt a mindenkori civilizáció testén.”
(Földényi F. László: A melankólia dicsérete)

Mintha egy hosszú álom fázisain mennénk keresztül. Utazunk, és ki tudja hová. Villanások. Kísértés, hogy oda nézzünk, ahová nem lehet. Vakfolt.
/
Gondolatok a koporsóban. Az elmúlás prizmáján megtörni az életünket, és megnézni, mi is zajlik bennünk éppen. Napló. Társkeresés – szellemi és anyagi síkon. Kitépett lapok, idegenség a saját bőrünkben.
/
Az elhagyott sírkövekben adva van valami melankolikus. Et in Arcadia ego. Öröklét? Töredékek. Gondozásba vett kôhalom, megtisztított memento.
/
Redukált mozgástér: tinta, papír. Vetületek. Az érzékelés határai. Még a legsötétebb szobában lévô tárgyaknak is van árnyéka. Keretbe zárt energia.
/
A mérhetetlen méregetése. Versek. Az elrejtés és kiemelés itt egyazon gesztus. Összekötni a pontokat. Mi történik, ha feltesszük a legfontosabb kérdést? Mítoszok után tovább, bele a sötétbe.

„Neither here nor there: melancholy comes to life from a crack between the two. It is a dark spot on the body of all civilization.” (Földényi F. László: A melankólia dicsérete)
As if going through the stages of a long dream. We are travelling, and who knows where. Glints. The temptation to look where it is prohibited. Blindspot.
/
Thoughts in the coffin. Breaking our lives on the prism of decease and examining what is going on in ourselves. Diary. The search for a partner – both in the material and spiritual realm. Torn out pages, being a stranger in our skin.
/
There is something intrinsically melancholic in neglected gravestones. Et in Arcadia ego. Eternal life? Fragments. A bunch of stones in care, cleansed memento.
/
Reduced range: tint, paper. Projections. The limitations of perception. Even objects of the darkest room have a shadow. Energy imprisoned in frames.
/
Measuring the immeasurable. Poems. Here hiding and highlighting are the same gesture. Connecting the dots. What happens if we ask the single pivotal question? Beyond myths, straight into the dark.

Simon Zsuzsi – Alexandru
2022. február 15. 19:00
2022. február 15. – március 4.

Megnyitó: február 15. 19.00
A kiállítást megnyitja: Hadas Miklós szociológus, dzsenderkutató

Simon Zsuzsi új munkája bár látszólag fordulat és témaváltás korábbi nőközpontú, főként a feminizmusra, a női testképre, női gondolkodásra fókuszáló projektjeihez képest, azoknak mégis szerves folytatása. Hiszen, ha a nő, a női szépség, a nő megjelenése, látványossága konstrukció, mégpedig, eredetét tekintve a férfi csöppet sem öncélú vagy érdek nélküli, hanem elnyomó alkotása, úgy megfordítva, a férfi, a férfias princípiumok, a férfi látványa is kérdésessé, kutatás tárgyává tehető. Hiszen a bináris oppozíciók logikájából következően a férfi azzal, hogy megalkotja/gyarmatosítja önmaga számára a nőt, önmagát is hozzá-, pontosabban fölé-konstruálja.
Simon Zsuzsi (1988) a Magyar Képzőművészeti Egyetem intermédia szakán végzett 2015-ben. Kutatási területe a feminizmus, a testről alkotott kép és az aktivizmus. Jelenleg az ideális férfi testképpel foglalkozik. 2012 óta a Fiatal Képzőművészek Stúdiójának tagja. Főként konceptuális műveket hoz létre, amelyek leggyakoribb médiuma a fotográfia. Évek óta foglalkozik különböző független és intézményi kortársművészeti projektek fényképezésével és videózásával. Jelenleg Budapesten él és alkot.

Vernissage: 7pm, 15 February
Opening speech: Miklós Hadas, sociologist, gender researcher

Although Zsuzsi Simon's new work seems to be a turn and a change of subject from her earlier women-centred projects, which focused mainly on feminism, female body image and female thinking, it is an organic continuation of them. Since if woman, the female beauty, the appearance and spectacle of woman is a construction, inherently not without interest but the oppressive creation of man, then conversely, man, masculine principles, the spectacle of man can also be called into question and made the subject of research. For according to the logic of binary oppositions, the man, by creating/colonizing the woman for himself, also constructs himself in relation to her, or more precisely, over her. In her project Alexandru, Zsuzsi Simon is interested in man, masculinity, the construction of masculinity, the body of stereotypes, not through the male gaze, which is suggested by men, but through the gaze of a woman, specifically Zsuzsi Simon.
In a blatant example of her subversive process, Simon inverts - or rather further inverts - the remake of Jeff Wall's famous Picture for Women (1979), in such a way that, although Wall had already deconstructed the traditional male-female, creator-model roles, Simon's picture displays the man floating in the aura/image of his self-conscious masculinity as the muse or model of a female creator.
Thus, Alexandru, which is the first phase of a larger male research, could be subtitled as Image for Man/Men/Muse, through the analytical, critical, yet admiring gaze of a woman. However, the complex work of Simon and her eye does not only scan the concrete body, the raw meat, but also creates metaphors of masculinity, strength, manliness, and thus in a sense violence, but also vulnerability. The project shows both the image of a man formed by himself - what he is proud of, what he wants, and what he hides, sublimates and does not show - as well as the way how a woman sees it.
Zsuzsi Simon (1988) graduated from the Intermedia Department of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in 2015. Her research interests include feminism, body image and activism. She is currently dealing with the questions of the ideal male body image. She has been a member of the Studio of Young Artists Association since 2012. She creates mainly conceptual pieces, using mostly photography as her most frequent medium. She has been working for many years as a photographer and videographer for various independent and institutional contemporary art projects. Simon currently lives and works in Budapest.
