A Budapest Galéria nemzetközi, csoportos kiállításának címét adó mikrotómia
fogalma a természettudományok területéről származik. Azt az eljárást
jelöli, amely során a vizsgálni kívánt anyagból – legyen az kőzet, állati,
növényi vagy emberi szövet – a szakemberek egy nanométerben mérhető
vastagságú szeletet metszenek le, hogy aztán mikroszkóp alatt
tanulmányozhassák tulajdonságait.

A Mikrotómia című kiállításon szereplő festőművészek hasonló, anyagközpontú
vizsgálódást folytatnak. A festményt, mint médiumot alapelemeire szedve, a
vakráma-vászon-festék hármasát megbontva hoznak létre alkotásokat.
Felhasogatják a vakrámát, szétvágják és összevarrják a vásznat, leoldják
vagy visszaszedik a pigmentet a képfelületről. Feltárják a maszkolás
technikájának nyomait, a szövet szálai között passzírozzák át a festéket,
vagy épp a vásznat elhagyva, a falra festik meg a képet. Míg Bernáth
Dánielt és Dejan Dukic-ot a festészet organikussága érdekli, ahogyan a
természet adta formák segítségével és az anyaggal közvetlen fizikai
kontaktusban hozzák létre alkotásaikat, addig Bagi Attilát és Koszorús
Ritát egyaránt foglalkoztatja a festmények térhez való viszonya és az
alkotási folyamat során rétegződő képfelületek megmutatása. A négy fiatal
alkotó, bár más-más megközelítésből és indíttatásból végzi
“anyagkísérleteit”, mégis, mindannyiuk művei értelmezhetőek az új absztrakt
festészetre adott reakcióként, egyúttal kérdésfeltevésként a festészet
aktuális megítéléséről és létjogosultságáról.

Budapest Gallery’s next international group exhibition borrows its title
from the domain of natural sciences. Microtomy stands for the method of
slicing extremely thin sections of nanoscale thickness from a material –
whether mineral, animal, plant or human – to be examined under a microscope.
The painters represented at the exhibition Microtomy engage in a similar
analysis with a focus on the nature of the material. Dissecting painting as
a medium into its basic components, they create artworks that subvert the
triad of stretcher-canvas-paint. They split the stretcher, slash and sew up
the canvas, dissolve or scrape back pigment from the image surface. They
reveal traces of the technique of masking, they press paint through the
threads of the fabric, or leaving the canvas behind, they paint straight on
the wall. While Dániel Bernáth and Dejan Dukic are interested in the
organic quality of painting as they engender their works in immediate
physical contact with the material, with the help of natural forms, Attila
Bagi and Rita Koszorús are both intrigued by the relation of paintings to
space and the act of revealing the superimposed layering of image surfaces
as they evolve during the creative process. Although each of the four young
artists conducts his or her “material experiments” from different
approaches and for different reasons, still, all of their works can be
interpreted as reactions to new abstract painting, while also querying the
current appraisal and raison d’être of painting as an art form.

A természettudományos gyűjtemények alkotta tudás sok fajta lehet.
Bármennyire is az objektív, a személyes értelmezéstől eltávolított, egzakt
jelleg jut róla eszünkbe, tudható, mennyi hit és félreértés, gazdasági,
politikai szándék formálja ezeket, milyen sokféle, olykor egymásnak
ellentmondó tudás olvasható ki belőlük. És mennyi marad rejtve. A kiállítás
olyan, kortárs művészek által bemutatott vagy kezdeményezett
természettudományos – vagy annak tűnő – kutatási anyagokból,
gyűjteményekből áll, amelyek valamilyen elfeledett vagy elveszett,
láthatatlan és ismeretlen tudás nyomába indulnak, ezek feltárására vagy
megteremtésére vállalkoznak.
Láthatatlan vagy ismeretlen tudások: a szókapcsolat szándékos ellentmondás,
hiszen tudásunk leginkább arról lehet, amit ismerünk, az ismeretlen tudás a
racionalitás építőköveinek réseire, a képzelet helyére utal. Erről a
helyről válik láthatóvá a múlt és elképzelhetővé a jövő. A bemutatott művek
felismerhetővé teszik a mágikus tulajdonságokkal rendelkező lények
jelenlétét, a teremtéstörténetek és a tudományos gondolkodás
összefonódását, az ökológiai válság jeleit. A „hely szellemének” otthonai
ezek a tárgyak, akkor is, ha lakójuk olykor nem ismert.
Az itt felsorakoztatott kövek, fák, tenger formálta gubacsok, és más
organikus anyagok tehát olyan, sokak számára hozzáférhetetlen tudásokat
rejtenek, amelyeknek léte ismert, de tartalma kevésbé. A gyűjteményeket
bemutató (vagy a bemutatás által ezeket létrehozó) művészek ezen apró,
töredékesen maradt tárgyakban olyan dimenzióugrásokat tesznek lehetővé,
amelyek száz éveket ívelnek át és a földhöz, az anyaghoz való kötődést,
odatartozást a képzelet támogatásával teszik újra átélhetővé. A gyűjteményi
darabok felleléséhez jórészt a földet kell néznünk, a lépéseink helyét
magunk mögött és előtt, a nyomokat és az elkövetkező lehetőségét. Az így
lelt darabok sokszor nem illenek össze, hiátusok teszik változatossá a
képet, amelyben képzelet és tudás képeznek kötőanyagot.

Knowledge introduced by natural history collections can be manifold.
Although they are believed to have an objective, exact nature, that they
are distanced from personal interpretation, it is known how many beliefs
and misunderstandings, economical and political intentions shape them, how
diverse, sometimes even contradictory knowledge can be deducted from
collections. And how much remains hidden in them. The exhibition consists
of – at least seemingly – natural scientific research materials and
collections that were presented or initiated by contemporary artists; the
works follow the trails of forgotten or lost, invisible and unfamiliar
knowledge, and undertake to unravel or create them.
Invisible or unfamiliar knowledge: this combination of words is
intentionally paradoxical, as we can mostly have knowledge of things that
we are familiar with, so unfamiliar knowledge refers to the gaps in the
building blocks of rationality, to the place of imagination. From this
point, the past becomes visible and the future imaginable. Through the
exhibited works, the presence of creatures with magical attributes, the
interconnectedness of creation myths and scientific thinking, the tiny
signs of ecological crisis become recognizable. These objects function as
the homes of „the spirit of place” even when their inhabitants remain
unknown.
The stones, trees, galls formed by the sea, and other organic or almost
organic materials that are lined up here hide such knowledge that is
inaccessible for many, and while their existence is known, their substance
is not so much. The artists, who present collections (or create them
through presentation), enable dimensional shifts in these tiny, fragmented
objects that overarch centuries, and by supporting imagination, they make
it possible to experience the attachment and belonging to the earth, to the
material again. To find the objects, we mostly need to look at the ground,
at the places of our steps behind and ahead, at the traces and the
possibilities of what is yet to come. The objects found this way often
don’t fit together, their hiatus makes the picture more realistic, for
which imagination and knowledge function as binding agents.
