Common physical processes occurring in nature used to inform discourses on
society, ever since the reification of the "human material" set up a
disciplinary subject. These dynamics like accumulation, layering,
stratification, consolidation or crystallization of raw materials are also
engineering their way around how we think about the constructedness of
grand narratives (class, nation, culture, ideology etc.) in human history.
With the act of translation between the two domains (anthropologisation of
natural materials and naturalization of communal matters) however, true
knowledge on the mechanics can get lost, deliberately obscured and
re-purposed by any powerful will.
Accumulation of Matter features artistic projects that open up an interplay
between intrinsic organic formations and interested human agents. The once
neutral ‘earth-old things’ newly re-framed as national heritage, tourist
site, battlefield, ethnic land, destination of group pilgrimage or party
emblem easily conform to institutionalized geomythologies. Contemporary
artists - taken up the role of social interaction designers - infuse their
praxes to survey the socio-spatial terrain. The exhibition invites to
(re)discover these ideological landmarks inscribed on the highest peaks of
the Carpathian Basin (Alps-Tatras-Carpathians).

Seitdem die Vergegenstandlichung der menschlichen ”Materie” ein
interdisziplinares Thema bildet, prägen die gangigen physischen Prozesse,
die in der Natur geschehen, die gesellschaftlichen Diskurse. Diese
Dynamiken wie die Ansammlung, Anhäufung, Schichtenbildung, Konsolidierung
oder Kristallisierung der Rohstoffe beeinflussen, wie wir über die
Konstruiertheit der grundlegenden Narrative in der Geschichte der
Menschheit (soziale Klasse, Nation, Kultur oder Ideologie) denken. Mit der
Wechselwirkung zwischen zwei Gebieten der Anthropologisierung der
naturlichen Stoffe und der Naturalisierung der kommunalen Angelegenheiten,
kann die wirkliche Kenntnis der Mechanismen verloren gehen, es wird
absichtlich verschleiert und für neue Zwecke bestimmt.

Accumulation Of Matter zeigt kunstlerische Projekte, welche eine
Interaktion zwischen organischen Formen und interessierten Menschen
ermöglichen. Die einst neutralen Dinge, die seit der Entstehung der Welt
existieren, sind neu bestimmt als nationales Erbe, Touristenattraktion,
Schlachtfeld, ethnisches Land, Pilgerziel oder Parteisymbol, und können
schnell zu etablierten ”Geo-Mythologien” werden. Zeitgenössische Künstler
übernehmen die Rolle sozialer ”Interaktions-DesignerInnen” und untersuchen
ein sozialräumliches Gebiet.
Die Ausstellung lädt dazu ein, diese, in die höchsten Bergspitzen des
Karpatenbeckens (Alpen-Tatra- Karpatenbecken) gravierten ideologischen
Erkennungszeichen wieder zu entdecken.
