Avian Ecologies in Contemporary Art

When in 1972 artist István Haraszty called a live canary trapped in a cage Like a Bird, he made explicit the artwork’s political connotations and subsequently the neo-avant-garde summer retreat at Balatonbolgár was closed by the communist authorities. Today however birds appear in contemporary art not only as symbols of everything from the quest for personal freedom to allegorical representations of national identity, but also in their own right as a species. The exhibition Like a Bird explores the migration of the avian metaphor against the backdrop of an overarching reality of ecological endangerment, whose radical implications for planetary politics and society are still unfolding.
