Magyar fürdőélet

Válogatás a Völgyi-Skonda Kortárs Gyűjteményből

2011. június 16. - augusztus 28.

A híres és régmúltra visszatekintő magyarországi fürdőélet témája köré
fonódik a Völgyi Miklós és Skonda Mária gyűjteményének válogatott anyagát
bemutató kiállítás. "A témaválasztással tudatosan ötvözni szeretnénk
Magyarország egyik kiemelkedő kincsét, a fürdőkultúrát a kortárs
képzőművészeti értékekkel" (Völgyi Miklós, Skonda Mária). A gyűjtőházaspár

műtárgyat számláló kollekciójában a XX. század második felének
klasszikusaitól kezdve a középgeneráció mesterein keresztül a legfiatalabb,
ígéretes alkotók művei is helyet kaptak. A Völgyi-Skonda-gyűjtemény annyiban
tekinthető hagyományos szemléletű kollekciónak, hogy elsősorban festmények,
grafikai jellegű művek, ritkábban pedig szobrok, tehát a tradicionális
műfajokban kivitelezett alkotások találhatóak meg benne. Ily módon a
kétségtelenül klasszikus modernizmus művészeti gyökereiből táplálkozik.
Ennek ellenére a gyűjtemény szerkezetének irányai állandóan alakulnak,
kollekció laza tematikus egységek köré szerveződött, azonban a magyarországi
fürdőéletre reflektáló gyűjteményi egység egy valóban zárt műcsoportot
alkot.

a művészeknek.
Breznay Párizsban élő festőként szinte hazajár a
Lukácsba, ami "meghatározó Budapest-élményei" közé tartozik. A kiállításon
társadalomkritikus attitűd (Galambos Tamás), a fürdőkhöz elengedhetetlenül
a gőzpárás misztikum (Tamási Claudia). A debreceni MODEM-ben bemutatott

A kiállítás megtekinthető 2011. augusztus 28-ig - hétfő kivételével minden
nap - 10-től 18 óráig, csütörtökönként 12-től 20 óráig.

Völgyi-Skonda Contemporary Art Collection

16. June - 28. August 2011

The exhibition displaying a selection of Miklós Völgyi's and Mária Skonda's
collection embraces the theme of the famous and traditional spas in Hungary.
"With the choice of theme we consciously intend to fuse one of Hungary's
outstanding treasures, that is, its spa culture, with contemporary artistic
values" (Miklós Völgyi, Mária Skonda). The contemporary artists invited by
the collector couple dealt with the given subject matter in their own style
and way of expression; their common point of departure, of course, was the
spa scene.

Miklós Völgyi as a collector is in fact an "omnivore." In his collection of
over a thousand works of art we can find items by the classical artists of
the late 20th century as well as the masters of the middle generation and
the youngest, most promising artists. The Völgyi-Skonda collection may be
considered traditional to the extent that it contains primarily paintings,
drawings, and less frequently statues, that is, pieces created in the
traditional genres. This way it undoubtedly feeds on the origins of
classical modernism. In spite of this the aspects of the collection's
structure constantly shift, every time following the actual and evidently
subjective drive of collector preference (a powerful example to illustrate
this: in the past years the couple consciously purchased works from female
artists processing the theme of the feminine experience). Even though for a
while it has been evident that the collection is organized around loose
thematic units, the items touching upon Hungarian spa culture constitute a
limited group of pieces.

The colorful and rich spa scene in Hungary is not a newly found source of
inspiration for artists. 20th century literature and fine art draw upon this
topic on numerous occasions, dealing with this ambivalent, simultaneously
sacred and profane world, rich in symbolic references on the one hand, and
testing the boundaries of "good morals" on the other (it suffices to recall
the adventures of writer and spa physician, Géza Csáth). Miklós Völgyi and
Mária Skonda had the deliberate intention to expand their collection in a
thematic direction. The first item which also served as source of
inspiration was one of Pál Breznay's canvases. As a painter living in Paris,
Breznay comes to visit the Lukács Spa as if it was his second home, which is
one of his "defining Budapest-experiences." The twenty-five artists
introduced at the exhibition all tackle the topic from a particular and
unique angle, each emphasizing a different aspect or feature of spa culture.
The viewers are provided with the evocation of the inexorable nostalgic
atmosphere (János Kósa), with the absorbed, psychologizing spa experience
(László Fehér), with the satirical manner of the culture critic (Tamás
Galambos), with the essential eroticism of spas (Kriszta Nagy), and with
indecent coquetry (Márta Kiss) or steamy mysticism (Claudia Tamási). The
exhibition shown in Debrecen's MODEM lines up literary quotations parallel
to the projects so that the visual and verbal forms of expression can
simultaneously introduce the remarkably diverse and many-colored Hungarian
spa culture to the audience.

Exhibition is on view until the 28th of August 2011 from 10am to 6pm every
day, except Mondays, and from 12am to 8pm on Thursdays.
