1. Aims
AltArt Foundation calls for European projects to be developed during a
2-3 weeks artist-in-residence in Cluj, Romania. During the residence
the selected artist is expected to undertake research and work on the
production of an artwork that “remakes” a piece of media art relevant
for the media art history. The artwork will be exhibited in 2012 in
Cluj (Fabrica de Pensule) and Brno (House of Arts).
The artist-in-residence aims to support a European artist to develop
an original artwork that complies with the general thematic of the
REMAKE project.
The artist is expected to:
Use the residence period to research and produce the artwork. In
specific cases, the work may be finalized after the end of the
residence period, but no later than a month after this date.
Give a public lecture/presentation during his/her stay in Cluj, either
on the topic of the artwork proposed for REMAKE, or a previous work of
the artist.
There is no restriction related to the format of the artwork provided
that it is possible that the work is produced in the given conditions
and it is suitable for exhibition. The size and technical scale of the
work needs to be reasonable and supportable by technical crews in the
various galleries/spaces that are being considered. We are looking for
completed works rather than demo pieces. Projects must be original.
The artwork will be included in the REMAKE collection/catalogue and
exhibition. 2012 exhibitions include: Cluj (Fabrica de Pensule) and
Brno (House of Arts).
2. Themes
The proposed artwork should fit the thematic of the REMAKE project. It
is expected to propose an up-to-date reflection, re-interpretation and
re-make of an already existing piece of media art, thus generating a
reflection on both the evolution of society, technologies, and
artistic practices, and bringing back to public attention a specific
moment in the media art history.
Priority will be given to works which enable participation and
interactivity for the audience, tackle issues related to the
contemporary society and/or use current technologies.
The REMAKE - Rethinking Media Art in K(C)ollaborative Environments
(www.remakeme.eu) project is aimed at collaborative production and
international presentation of new artworks, inspired by the rich
history of European media art. The project is building on a research
conducted in the recent years by a group of theorists, called MONOSKOP
- collaborative research on media art and culture in Europe. The
research project examines the social context of historical
developments in media art (with special focus on Central and Eastern
Europe). Analysis of socio-poetic conditions of art and technology
crossings from 1960s to 2000s draws upon the undertakings in
experimental and avantgarde film, performance art, computer art, video
art, experimental music, sound art, and media theory.
The aim of the REMAKE project is to enhance this on-going research in
an appealing, playful and artistically-challenging way: by producing
and presenting a set of up-to-date artworks which will be inspired by
particular well-known (but also forgotten) pieces of media art history
in different European countries.
REMAKE focuses on creating artworks, collaborative shows and academic
events in selected centers for contemporary art of Europe. The project
contains of workshops, artistic residencies, public shows (exhibitions
in Brno, Reykjavik and Cluj, multimedia performances in Bratislava,
Banska Bystrica, Prague, Nantes, Cluj and others) , lectures and
discussions, supporting circulation of lecturers/artists, as well as
„collaborative lectures“ combining theory and practice.
The whole contemporary media art is trans-sectorial, including
different media forms and cultural, as well as social and political
dimensions. This phenomenon has its deep roots in what we defined as
"new media history" (art of second half of 20th century). The REMAKE
project is trying to enhance these factors and will focus on
transversal interactions and intersections - creating artworks,
collaborative shows and academic events in selected centers for
contemporary art of Europe. Media art goes beyond what was
traditionally named as visual arts, performing arts and music – it
freely combines different media, thus offering a wide field of
interactions.
