Call for Applications: Les Ateliers de Rennes - Contemporary Art Biennial
The purpose of the 2nd Call for Applications of 'Les Ateliers de Rennes' is to select a new artistic project and a team for the 2012 and 2014 editions of Les Ateliers de Rennes - Contemporary Art Biennial.
To participate, an application is available on the website www.artnorac.fr from January 4, 2010.
The candidates should form teams which must include at least one curator and one administrator. The proposal should link economy/business and contemporary art. The rules of this contest will set the context and scope while allowing for great freedom in the execution. A budget of 2 million euros will be allocated for each edition.
The contest process has two phases:
- The preselection of three projects on March 31, 2010
- The final selection on September 30, 2010
Les Ateliers de Rennes is an ambitious event to bring together contemporary art and the corporate world. The event has been initiated by Art Norac, an association 'loi 1901' created by the French food industry group Norac to unite its patronage activities.
'Valeurs croisées' (Crossed values), the first edition, occured in 2008 and presented works by more than sixty French and foreign artists. Productions resulting from SouRCEs, as well as works specifically made for this event, public commissions and works lent by public and private collections were presented at the Couvent des Jacobins and in most of the cultural venues in the city. The angle adopted was that of crossed looks between the subject artist taking part in art's real and symbolic economy on the one hand, and on the other the subject working in an organization that is part of the general economic system (company employee, entrepreneur). Through different prisms (the artist considering his own production, or reacting to the industrial production modes, the employee artist, the artist employee, the artist entrepreneur, etc.), Valeurs croise'es questioned the value creation parameters, whether economic, social or symbolic, put at risk in the act of production.
The second edition will take place from April 30 through July 18, 2010. 'Ce qui vient'(That which comes), will focus on the theme of the future and the thought surrounding it.
This project is organized in partnership with the city of Rennes, Rennes Metropole, the Ministry of Culture and Communication and the Regional Direction of Cultural Affairs of Brittany. The Frac Bretagne, the Beaux-Arts School of Rennes, the Beaux-Arts Museum of Rennes, la criée Contemporary Art Center, and the Galerie Art & Essai at the University of Rennes II, will also support this event.
