Committed to the creation and dissemination of Contemporary Culture, the University of Extremadura, Spain, through the Vice-Chancellor of University Extension, and considering the interest in promoting young artists between national and international development of new artistic languages, announces the first edition of LUMEN_EX 2010, Digital Art Awards.
Since 1992, the University of Extremadura has announced Artistic Creation Awards, through which, has led to the formation of an Art Collection in order to provide the university community and the general public direct access to the understanding, study and enjoyment of new languages and artistic vanguards.
Being sensitive to the evolution of these languages and techniques and trying to cooperate actively in the construction of the new digital culture, still emerging, the UEx, through the Vice-Chancellor of University Extension, is now entering a new section of its art collection, which previous updates, to promote and convene these first international Digital Art Awards, LUMEN_EX 2010, directed by Jose Ramon Alcala and selected by a prestigious jury.
RULES & ENTRY REQUERIMENTS
01_ANNOUNCEMENT
The University of Extremadura, through the Vice-Chancellor of University Extension, announces the first edition of LUMEN_EX, Digital Art Awards, which will be held in 2010.
02_CATEGORIES
The Digital Art Awards are divided into two categories:
. Digital Graphic Artworks in any physical format that succeed in offering new and imaginative visual images based on artistic work using new or previously unpublished iconography developed through the creative use of digital tools, techniques and media.
. Digital Animation Artworks (possibly interactive) with a maximum duration of 3 minutes ('Minimations').
03_ PRIZES
The prizes are as follows:
. For Best Digital Graphic work in physical format, a First prize of FOUR THOUSAND EUROS (€4,000) and a Second prize of TWO THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED EUROS (€2,500) will be awarded.
. For Best Digital Animation, a First prize of €2,500 and a Second prize of €1,000 will be awarded.
All prizes will be subject to current tax legislation and legally stipulated deductions. The award-winning work will become part of the University of Extremadura's art collection.
04_THE SUBMITTED WORK
The work submitted for competition must be original and must not have been exhibited or reproduced through any other media, or publishing or broadcasting system prior to the deadline for competition entries.
Only one work per artist may be submitted in each category.
The work entered for competition must be printed in any kind of physical format, and its measurements must not exceed 150 centimetres on any side. The work must be framed or presented in the format in which it will be exhibited. Each work must be wrapped using reusable and resistant packaging for protection, so that it can be returned later, and be easily opened and closed. Work that is submitted without appropriate packaging will not be accepted.
The costs of delivery and return, as well as transport insurance, shall be borne by the artist, except for the return of works that are selected for exhibition, in which case the costs will be borne by the organisers. Artwork will only be returned to the address provided on the competition entry form, which can be downloaded from the organisers' website or collected from the offices of the Vice-Chancellor of University Extension at the University of Extremadura.
The organisers will take great care in the safekeeping of the works submitted for the prize, but it is not responsible for any damage, defect or loss that the artwork could incur during dispatch, receipt or return. Competition entrants may elect to take out their own insurance policy to cover the aforementioned risks.

For work entered under the category of Digital Animation ('Minimaciones'), the same information as the previous category applies, but there is the added possibility of sending work by email or other online system, in which case, a previously downloaded and completed online competition entry form should be sent together with the animation files.

05_DOCUMENTATION TO SUBMIT
In addition to attaching the competition entry form to the submitted work, the work must be clearly identified with the following information on the packaging:
. Name of the artist (or pseudonym),
. Title of the work,
. Date of completion,
. Measurements or duration of the work (as appropriate),
. Techniques used,
. Number of published (or printed) copies of the work,
. Name and postal address for return of the artwork (if not awarded a prize).
06_ COMPETITION JUDGES
Prizes will be awarded by a panel of judges, composed of leading professionals in the field, who will establish their own assessment criteria to make the decision. The judging panel will be chaired by the Award's Director, Jose R. Alcala (Professor at University of Castilla-La Mancha and Director of MIDE, the International Museum of Electrographic Artworks in Cuenca). The judges' decision cannot be appealed and can be declared void.
The names of the artists selected and the winners will be published on the Awards' website, www.unex.es/premiosartedigital, during the week following the judges' meeting.
07_ EXHIBITION
>From all of the works submitted for competition, the judges will make a prior selection, which, together with the first and second prizes awarded in both categories, will form part of a temporary exhibition organised by the University of Extremadura in March and April 2010, in which the winning works will be exhibited alongside the finalists. By participating, the selected artists accept the possibility that their work may be used further in other touring exhibitions.
A catalogue including the selected artists' work will also be published in physical and digital format in order to be able to show work (or excerpts) from the Digital Animation category, 'Minimations'.
08_ COMPETITION ENTRY PERIOD
The competition entry period for acceptance of artwork will run from the date of publication of these Rules and Entry Requirements to the deadline on 12 February 2010, inclusive. Pieces received after this date will not be accepted.
09_ ACCEPTANCE OF THE RULES AND GUARANTEES
Artists who submit work will be legally responsible for ensuring that the rules and entry requirements of the competition are complied with, in terms of ownership in its strictest sense and intellectual property. Entries that do not fulfil these criteria cannot be selected and will therefore be disqualified.
By agreeing to participate in the competition, the artists guarantee that they are the owners of the work submitted and they possess full intellectual property rights. They also accept that their work can be exhibited in the locations that the organisers deem appropriate.
The artists accept that the organisers can display and/or license the reproduction of any of the selected artwork submitted to the competition for cultural and educational purposes, without incurring any fee payable to the artist (or agency representing the artist), including coverage in any national or international media, catalogues and the Internet. Intellectual property rights over selected and winning work will be retained at all times by the artist.
Participation in the first edition of LUMEN_EX, Digital Art Awards from the University of Extremadura, implies full acceptance of its rules and entry requirements, and in the event of circumstances that are not included, the judges' decision must be accepted.
