S1 Artspace invites submissions for its annual season of artists’ film & video
screenings. Since 2003 S1 / salon has presented around one hundred and fifty
films by artists based internationally. We are inviting artists to submit
works for three new programmes to be screened at S1 later this year. 

S1 / salon is curated around material selected from an open call with the
intention of creating a platform for presenting film & video without
prescribed themes or categories. There are no stipulations for material other
than the work must be under 15 minutes. Each salon screening also features a
curated programme of contemporary works or archive material selected by the
salon curator and guest selectors.

S1 / salon 2008 will be selected by a panel comprised of guest selectors
Benjamin Cook, Director of LUX and artist Anja Kirschner; and the S1 / salon
2008 curator, Sophia Crilly. 

Benjamin Cook is Director and founder of LUX, London; a UK agency for the
exploration of ideas around artists' moving image practice. Previously he was
acting Director of the LUX Centre, Head of Distribution at London Electronic
Arts and Cinema Assistant at the ICA, London. He originally trained as a
journalist and a film archivist and worked as archivist for the Wellcome
Institute, Anthology Film Archives, New York and the Northern Film Archive,
Gateshead. He has worked freelance as a film programmer for the National Film
Theatre and many other venues and festivals internationally, and was also the
founder of the London Pan-Asian Film Festival. He has written widely on film
and edited two books, The Animate! Book, Re-thinking Animation (2007) and
Subjects and Sequences: A Margaret Tait Reader (2006). 

Anja Kirschner (born 1977, Munich, lives in London) trained at the Slade
School of Fine Art and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work
spans a number of disciplines – film, painting, drawing and music – and
collapses documentary and historical sources, literary themes and popular
genres such as sci-fi and adventure films. Her film, POLLY II, Plan for a
Revolution in Docklands, has been acclaimed for exploring themes central to
Kirschner's work: the divisions and exclusions imposed through law, language,
race and property and the difficulties and possibilities of social and
political transformation. Her new film Trail of the Spider (in collaboration
with David Panos) premiered at Tate Modern, London, in May and was shown as
part of Nought to Sixty at the ICA, London, in June. Kirschner recently
exhibited with Hollybush Gardens at Art Basel / Art Premiere, in Basel,
Switzerland, June 2008.

Sophia Crilly is a curator, artist and writer based in Manchester. She is
Director and founder of Bureau, a gallery with an international remit, which
opened in 2006. Bureau works with emerging and established artists to develop
new commissions, exhibitions and off-site projects, alongside representing
artists and exhibiting at art fairs, and collaborating on projects with other
galleries and arts organisations, such as Film & Video Umbrella, London. Prior
to setting up Bureau, Crilly was Programme Manager at Castlefield Gallery,
where she continues to work in a freelance capacity as Curator for PureScreen,
an international submission and touring artist film and video programme,
established in 2003. Crilly has curated DVD publications and screening
programmes which have shown in cinemas, galleries, and film festivals
internationally, including: Antimatter, Canada; Commonwealth Film Festival and
Cornerhouse, Manchester; Itau Cultural, Belo Horizonte and Porto Alegre,
Brazil; The Roxy, London; Slack Video, Hull; Side Cinema, Newcastle; and
Digital Media Festival, Valencia; as well as other venues in Belfast, Berlin,
Helsinki, the Netherlands, and throughout the UK. Crilly has a particular
interest in collective memory and the construction of narratives, their
resonance in authorship and interpretation, and the territory between reality
and fiction.
