Digital & Video
Art Fair
New York 2007

Frere Independent is pleased to present the program of DiVA for the year 2007.

History
The first Video Art Fair organized by Frere Independent was named Moving Images in November 2003 at the Winsor Hotel in Chinatown. This exhibition counted about 10 international exhibitors, and lasted just one day. Moving Images was also the first art fair dedicated exclusively to Video and New Media Art worldwide. To avoid confusion with Cinema or short film festivals we decided not to use the name "Moving Images" and renamed the fair DiVA. (Digital & Video Art).

In 2004 Elga Wimmer joined the board as an adviser. She became the Curator in 2005 shortly after the first edition of DiVA in March 2005 at the New York Embassy Suites Hotel in Battery Park. The same year, DiVA presented editions in Brussels, Paris, and Cologne.

In 2006 Frere Independent did not renew DiVA Cologne and DiVA Brussels to focus on destinations like Paris and New York and exciting new cities such as Taipei and Miami Beach. Frere Independent co-produced ELA in Taiwan and opened the first edition of DiVA in Miami Beach with a container Village on Ocean Drive.

In about 3 years, DiVA has presented exhibitions in Paris, New York, Cologne, Brussels, Taipei and Miami Beach. The exhibitions also paid tribute the works of pioneers in the realm of video art such as Bruce Nauman, Nam June Paik, Jonas Mekas, Andy Warhol and Mattew Barney.

DiVANY07
DiVA New York 2007 returns to the Embassy Suites Hotel in Battery Park.
For 4 days, 2 floors of the Atrium of the Embassy Suites Hotel will host Digital and Video Art presented by over 30 international galleries. Each gallery will occupy one suite to display the works of artists they represent. Galleries are encouraged to dedicate one room of the suite to a single artist while using the second room to showcase more work by the same artist or works and projects by other artists. All works must be done with Video or New Media.

This year, we plan to keep the same number of galleries in order to better serve the galleries and the public. Due to the nature of Video Art, collectors need more time to view the work than regular media. Some videos last over 30 minutes. However it seems important to extend the fair in order to be more visible and make Video Art more accessible to the public. With this in mind we plan to present more panel discussions, a film program, and renew the DiVA Streets Program. DiVA Streets involves the placement of shipping containers that display Video Art in various locations on the streets of Manhattan.

A program of activities will also be listed mainly for the VIPs but also for the general public. A master suite on the floor of the exhibition will be used as a VIP room for collectors and exhibitors. We have also invited High Life to produce and promote nightly parties from 10pm to celebrate the occasion of DiVA NY07.

DiVA is an exceptional addition to the art market as well as an important meeting ground for the exchange of ideas, discussions and presentations of some of the most challenging and innovative work created with New Media and Video today. DiVA NY07 opens for VIP and members of the press at 4pm on Thursday February 22nd, to be followed by the vernissage at 7pm. The exhibition will remain open from February 22nd to the 25th 2007 at the Embassy Suites Hotel.
