RAM6: SOCIAL INTERACTION & COLLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE

The 6th RAM workshop entitled "Social Interaction & Collective
Intelligence" will take place from August 25th to 29th, 2004 in Vilnius,
Lithuania, organized by jutempus interdisciplinary art program. RAM6 takes
place at CAC - Contemporary Art Centre in Vilnius and in a forest out of
the city.

The aim of the workshop is to explore socially engaged concepts and
practices and to investigate phenomena of collective intelligence creating
a temporary media place and performing a character for a program that
contributes to a critical discussion in society by employing an analysis
of the new media apparatus. The ram workshop series provides the platform
for the first annual event of VILMA - Vilnius Interdisciplinary Lab for
Media Arts.

During spring 2004, the VILMA psyche started as a group of the local
community in Vilnius contributing local desires to chart the pathways for
a future VILMA scenario and generating the basic parameters to articulate
the issues of RAM6.

The notion of “forest” re-appearing in these desires encloses point of
departure “to get out of the forest of nature” and “not to be lost in the
forest of technology”. These points unfold directions for RAM6 as a
movement between two forests that link local desires with global scripts.

The first forest refers to the sense of a natural forest in Lithuania as
an important cultural icon that takes a large portion of Lithuania,
geographically, and culturally. The forest resonates with the special
relation of nation to nature, signifying our past, our psyche, a place
where all archetypes of resistance and rebellion, from Pagan to Partisans,
and guerilla stories radiate.

The second forest is the media. A technology related terrain over the
internet has become the forest that blocks the trees for many, as well as
a mythic matrix and an impenetrable set of codes and rituals that can be
either the access to alternatives or exclusionary.

The two forests are mixed in real time and the mix is translated through
the interface, one center of the event. Joining these forests at the
displaced center, is the VILMA identity in process, an interface which
narrates the event in terms of performative and discursive syntax.

The RAM6 workshop is structured as a performance through various stages of
scripting by a local group (psyche); a rehearsal with an international
group of theorists and practitioners that contribute tools & techniques,
methods & theories for orientation, exercising the idea “how to give a
voice to” through transmission, broadcast, interface and translation,
social networks and information visualization.
