Fifth Essex Graduate Conference in Political Theory
'Difference, Gender, Class'

7-8 May 2004

The Department of Government (www.essex.ac.uk/government), in collaboration
with the Centre for Theoretical Studies (www.essex.ac.uk/centres/TheoStud/)
and the Doctoral Programme in Ideology and Discourse Analysis
(www.essex.ac.uk/ida), is pleased to invite you to the Fifth Essex Graduate
Conference in Political Theory to be held at the University of Essex between
the 7th and 8th of May 2004. The conference has achieved a renowned
reputation for the quality of the papers presented and the large number of
international participants. Previous guest speakers have included Quentin
Skinner, Joan Copjec, James Tully, Fred Dallmayr, David Campbell and Chantal
Mouffe, among others. The conference provides an important opportunity to
engage with the contemporary challenges and possibilities of social and
political theory and to exchange views on ongoing research. Papers are
encouraged from a wide variety of backgrounds in the field of social and
political theory. Broad themes include:

* Issues in Political Theory
* Inclusion, Exclusion and Representation
* Democracy, Citizenship and Rights
* Ethnicity and Race
* Identity Politics and Mobilisation
* Modes of Subjectivity and Psychoanalysis

Please send proposed paper abstracts of 300-400 words to polcon at essex.ac.uk
by 20th March 2004.
