CAA Listing:
The University of Connecticut invites applications for the Director of
the Contemporary Art Galleries, an Assistant Professor faculty position
to begin in August 2004. The mission of the Contemporary Art Galleries
is to present a wide variety of programs in visual arts, including
exhibitions, symposia, lectures, and other events, in order to create a
far-reaching discourse of work and ideas about issues and practices in
contemporary art. With exhibition spaces at the university's main campus
in Storrs as well as its regional campus in Stamford, Contemporary Art
Galleries serves many communities: the Department of Art and Art
History, the University as a whole, regional audiences of Connecticut
and New England, and national and international art audiences.
The Director is responsible for all aspects of the leadership and
administration of an active university gallery program in a department
that encompasses undergraduate programs in studio art, design, and art
history, as well as an MFA program in studio art and a new MA program in
art history. The ideal candidate will be committed to the significant
role that a vital exhibition program can play in a university setting,
while recognizing the dual mission of the Contemporary Art Galleries as
both a professional and a teaching gallery. Responsibilities will
include working with a faculty committee to initiate, plan, and
implement exhibitions; administering the department's visiting artist
and lecture series; teaching; and coordinating events and exhibitions
with the gallery program at Stamford. The new director will also play a
major role in planning exhibition space in a projected new facility for
the School of fine Arts. Candidates should have proven records of
curating significant exhibitions of contemporary art as well as
demonstrated expertise in critical writing, grantwriting, publicity,
exhibition design and preparation, and general gallery administration,
and teaching experience. Advanced degree is required.
Application materials should include a letter of application; resume;
samples of publications and press coverage; visual documentation of
selected exhibits; brief statement of curatorial philosophy; syllabi,
and names and contact information for three references. Salary
competitive. A/D: January 12, 2004, for possible CAA interview; position
open until filled. Please send materials with SASE to: Chair,
