THE DRAWING CENTER ANNOUNCES

RÓZA EL-HASSAN: DRAWINGS

A drawing-based installation by Róza El-Hassan

New York - From June 7?July 26, 2003, The Drawing Center will present
Róza El-Hassan: Drawings, an installation by emerging artist Róza
El-Hassan, in its Drawing Room at 40 Wooster Street. Róza El-Hassan:
Drawings will open with a reception on Friday, June 6, 2003, from 6-8
PM.

Róza El-Hassan: Drawings marks the artist?s first museum exhibition
inNew York. El-Hassan will create a wall drawing consisting of a delicate
lattice of pencil lines encompassing the gallery. The graphite traces
emerge from the wall in discrete masses of wire, as transformations from
an ephemeral state into a solid one. The wire extensions underscore
El-Hassan?s interest in maintaining fluidity between media and space.
The wall drawing will also incorporate several works on paper from a
recent series entitled ?R. thinking/dreaming about overpopulation.? The
surface tension produced by the web of lines is relieved by the
interruptions afforded by these small works, creating alternate
fluctuations in space. Dissolving boundaries between the wall and the
gallery, and drawing and sculpture, the installation brings about a new
articulation of space, allowing for one based on the viewer?s
perception, both visual and bodily, of the installation as he or she
moves through it.

Accompanying Róza El-Hassan: Drawings will be an edition of Drawing
