Bj=F8rn Melhus: Primetime

Er=F6ffnung: 6. September 2002, 19 Uhr
durch Stadtrat Nikolaus Gradl
Einf=FChrung: Prof. Dr. Wulf Herzogenrath, Leiter der Kunsthalle Bremen

Ausstellungsdauer:
7. September - 27. Oktober 2002

Bj=F8rn Melhus in M=FCnchen.
e
vom 3. August bis 22. September 2002 die Ausstellung Bj=F8rn Melhus Video
pr=E4sentiert.

Videos Weeping, The Oral Thing (lothringer13/spiegel) sowie Fire Scene
(Autocenter Drive) (alle 2001) Werke aus, in denen Melhus amerikanische
Fernsehformate wie Predigersendungen und Daytime Talkshows kritisch
reflektiert.

In de=
n
n
unserer mediatisierten Kultur jenseits aller oberfl=E4chlichen Strickmuster
betrieben.

,
Anne Buschhoff, Patricia Dr=FCck, Andreas Kreul, Alice Kuzniar, Barbara
Nierhoff, Sabine Maria Schmidt und Christian Schoen (120 Seiten, zahlreiche
Farbabbildungen, 28,- =80).

Bj=F8rn Melhus: Primetime

Opening: 6 September 2002, 7p.m.
by City Councillor Nikolaus Gradl
Introduction by Professor Doctor Wulf Herzogenrath, Head of the Kunsthalle
Bremen

Duration:
7 September to 27 October 2002

Bj=F8rn Melhus, one of Germany=92s most renowned artists, is now being pres=
ented
by lothringer13/halle. The exhibition=92s title =93Primetime=94 is also the=
 title
of the video installation for which Bj=F8rn Melhus won last year=92s Spreng=
el
Artist Award in Hanover. The exhibition in the lothringer13/halle is Bj=F8r=
n
Melhus=92 first one in Munich. Primetime is a co-operation project with the
Kunsthalle Bremen; a joint catalogue has been produced with the Kunsthalle
which is presenting Bj=F8rn Melhus=92 exhibition Video from 3 August to 22
September 2002.

With the video installations Primetime (2001) and the videos Weeping, Auto
Center Drive and The Oral Thing (all 2001) lothringer13/halle is exhibiting
works in which Melhus critically reflects American television formats such
as preaching shows and daytime talk shows. While Primetime is a physically
accessible installation with a walk-on Stage Stairway, The Oral Thing is se=
t
in a virtual video dimension.

Bj=F8rn Melhus (*1966) is interested in the pursuit of an identity formed b=
y
the enticements of our media reality. Over the past years he has focused on
the American world of =91TV experience=92 and provided a consistent artisti=
c
study of our mass media culture beyond any superficial approach. The figure=
s
that appear in his video pieces, which he always plays himself, disclose
longings and desires and yet they are defeated by their imprisonment within
their own split selves. He nearly always produces his works using sound; by
taking acoustic material from cinema classics, from television and from pop
music he carves his imagination=92s narrative images into a polished
choreography which he then lays over the rhythm of clan constructions.

Bj=F8rn Melhus=92 video work The Oral Thing (2001) can be viewed simultaneo=
usly
on the screen of lothringer13/spiegel.

A catalogue accompanies the exhibition with essays by Wulf Herzogenrath,
Anne Buschhoff, Patricia Dr=FCck, Andreas Kreul, Alice Kuzniar, Barbara
Nierhoff, Sabine Maria Schmidt and Christian Schoen (120 pages, includes
many colour illustrations, =8028.00).
