"Safe Haven: Performance, Video, and the Body by Female Artists Today" Deadline for Initial Proposals must be received by May 13, 2002. Call for Participation in a session on the topic of "Safe Haven: Performance, Video, and the Body by Female Artists Today," to be held at the 91st Annual Conference of the College Art Association, which will be held in New York City on February 19-22, 2003. Session Chair Hayley Barker, Prof. of 2D/Digital Art at the College of the Redwoods, Eureka, CA This session will focus on the psychological, political, and economic motivations of emerging female artists who work in front of and behind the video camera. Female artists today may feel that the medium of performance carries unwelcome feminist connotations, and therefore choose to perform behind their own camcorders rather than before a live audience. Does the current state of video art enable a retreat from the feminist issues and political urgency so present in the performative work of lat!
e 1960ís art? Does the medium of video allow for more conceptual, and therefore less commercial, work? Papers should address issues of the female artist's body and its changing role in performance and video since the feminist work of the 1960ís. Art historians and female video and performance artists are encouraged to submit papers that explore the idea of video as safe haven. Information regarding the conference, as well as forms and rules for submission can be found at: http://www.collegeart.org/caa/ Please send proposals to: College of the Redwoods, Attn.: Hayley Barker/VPA, 7351 Tompkins Hill Rd., Eureka, CA 95501-9300
