The Budapest art market, a lost Csontvary painting, lying, faking, and =
back-stabbing are the ingredients in the Modern Theater Company's new =
play, Artifice, which premieres at the Varosi Szinhaz, Friday. Lewis, a =
barely paid video reporter, uses his videophone to peddle art between =
his buddy Sasha, a Serbian/Russian antique dealer, and distant clients. =
As the news agency that sent Lewis to Hungary sinks further and further =
into financial quicksand, he finds that his second job as an art dealer =
begins to get increasingly intriguing and profitable, and perhaps just a =
bit dangerous. The guys get a crack at serious business when the =
descendent of Hungarian Jewish aristocrats asks them to buy back a =
painting that was stolen by the Red Army in 1945. The appearance of =
Catherine, the descendant of a storied grandmother, and her search for a =
family cabinet, weaves another strand into the competing interests that =
underlie everyone's motives. =20
The play lies somewhere between film and theater, as live actors =
interact with taped actors through videophone conversations. It's been a =
year-long project for the company. After Jeff Taylor wrote Artifice last =
summer, he teamed up with video artist Kinga Kulcsar and filmed scenes =
with the actors throughout autumn in warehouses, antique shops, and =
thermal baths. In the performance the live actors perform in =
synchronization with the video sequences.=20
Artifice draws on the historical backdrop of the Soviet plunder of art =
collections, many of them belonging to Jewish families, at the end of =
WWII. The search for these lost treasures is conducted by videophone, =
and it's the same technology that enables the characters to shamelessly =
deceive and defraud one another.
