Michael Brenner (University of Munich)

"Epilog or Revival? Jewish Life in Germany Today"

Michael Brenner is Professor of Jewish History and Culture at the
University of Munich. His publications include "The Renaissance of
Jewish Culture in Weimar Germany" (1996) and "After the Holocaust:
Rebuilding Jewish Lives in Post-War Germany" (1997). He is co-author and
co-editor of the four-volume "German-Jewish History in Modern Times"
(1997-98) and co-editor of various other books. He serves as chairman of
the Wissenschaftliche Arbeitsgemeinschaft des Leo Baeck Instituts in
Deutschland and is a member of the Academic Advisory Committee of the
Jewish Museum in Berlin.

"The Renaissance of the Twelfth Century"

Giles Constable is Professor at the School of Historical Studies,
Princeton, a renowned scholar of the culture and spirituality of
medieval Europe. His books include "Attitudes toward Self-inflicted
Suffering in the Middle Ages" (1982), "Monks, Hermits and Crusaders in
Medieval Europe" (1988), "People and Power in Byzantium: An Introduction
to Modern Byzantine Studies" (together with Alexander Kazhdan, 1991),
"The Reformation of the Twelfth Century" (1996), and "Cluny from the
Tenth to the Twelfth Centuries: Further Studies" (2000).

"From Problems to Equations: How did Mathematics Make the Conceptual
Leap?"

Reviel Netz was born in Tel Aviv and studied there for his first two
degrees. He had completed his PhD at the Faculty of Classics, Cambridge
University, and is now Assistant Professor at the Department of
Classics, Stanford University. His publications in the history of Greek
mathematics include "The Shaping of Deduction in Greek Mathematics: A
Study in Cognitive History" (1999) and "The Works of Archimedes
Translated into English, Volume 1" (forthcoming).

Stephen Coleman is the Director of Studies at The Hansard Society for
Parliamentary Government and he also teaches on the MSc Programme in
Media and Communication at the London School of Economics. He is also
director of the Hansard e-democracy programme, the main work of which is
to examine practical ways of connecting citizens to the democratic
process. Stephen Coleman has been working as adviser to the Government's
UK Online project, particularly the Citizenspace area, which is designed
to give a voice to the public in policy-making.

Zhanna Vasilenko (Budapest Opera Ballet Concertmaster)

"An Evening of Brahms and Rachmaninov"

Zhanna Vasilenko was born in the small town of Iman in the Far East of
Russia not far from the Chinese border. She received her diploma as a
classical pianist in 1987 from the Academy of Music in Novosibirsk and
began to work in the Opera and Ballet Theater of Novosibirsk, one of the
leading ballet houses in the Soviet Union at the time along with the
Bolshoi in Moscow and the Kirov in Leningrad. Ms. Vasilenko was offered
a contract with the Budapest Opera following a performance at a music
festival in 1992. Although the repertoire of the Budapest Opera allows
her fewer opportunities to play solo performances than she had in
Russia, she has been featured in solo concerts at the Budapest Opera
playing works including Shostakovich's 2nd Piano Concerto, Schubert's
Fantasia in C Major, and Bach's 5th Brandenburg Concerto.
