"The Object(s) of Art History"
The nature of the art object in modern times is as much a product of
the history of institutional practices as it is a product of
philosophical theories. This paper discusses the role of one remarkable
nineteenth-century exhibition - the Exhibition of the Arts and
Manufactures of All Nations at London's Crystal Palace of 1851 - in
crafting ideas about art and its relation to race, class, ethnicity, and
nationality. It argues that modern art history, art criticism,
museology, art making, fashion, commodification, and aesthetic
philosophy need to be understood together as an interwoven network of
practices essential to the overall project of modernity.
