Introduction
Arts Management Network has become the media partner for the Second Austria=
n
Arts Marketing Congress at the end of november in Linz. In the final
discussion at the congress we are invited to talk about the future of the
profession of an arts manager. Please, use the chance to get in touch with
us and come to Linz!
We are currently looking for new reporters from countries like Canada,
Singapore, Sidney, Argentina, Ireland, Spain and Russia. You are invited to
get in contact with us to talk about this interesting task in order to join
one of the most attractive communities in the arts and culture.
The third issue of the newsletter offers you a good mix of interesting
reports. For example, you can find articles about a new top level domain fo=
r
museums and about the new book by Tom DeMarco with the demand to create mor=
e
open spaces for thinking and creativity in companies and organizations to b=
e
fit for the next big changes.

Yours Dirk Heinze & Dirk Schuetz

Reports
1. New Top Level Domain for Museums
The Museum Domain Management Association (MuseDoma) is currently accepting
preliminary requests for the reservation of subdomain names in the .museum
top-level domain.
Registration in .museum will be restricted to museums, museum organizations
and individual members of the museum profession according to the definition
established by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) adapted, if
necessary, to the specific needs of domain operation. This includes both
physical and virtual entities.

2. The Rise and Fall of Festivals - Reflections on the Salzburg Festival
The paper contributed by Bruno S. Frey, an expert in arts economics and a
lecturer working at the University of Zurich, takes a closer look at music
and opera festivals. From an economic point of view, the paper shows that
such festivals offer great artistic and economic opportunities, at the same
time these opportunities are also easy to destroy. Empirical evidence from
the Salzburg Festival show that government support can have negative effect=
s
on the innovative and economically success of festivals by introducing
distorting incentives and imposing all kinds of restrictions. The paper
draws policy suggestions on how the state can support art festivals.

4. Re-Launch of ArtsMarketing.org
ArtsMarketing.org is going to re-launch the website as a new and improved
resource for arts managers at October 26, 2001. It has developed to the
leading marketing source for non-profit arts organizations.
ArtsMarketing.org presents up-to-date marketing information, news and trend=
s

improved skills in marketing, earned income creation and audience
development, and facilitates an interactive community of peers and
professionals addressing both daily marketing needs and longer term
marketing issues.

5. Introduction: European Forum for the Arts and Heritage (EFAH)
The European Forum for the Arts and Heritage serves as an umbrella for arts
and heritage organisations, associations, professionals and cultural
networks in Europe. The members represent a vast number of artists, cultura=
l
administrators and heritage professionals. Together they make up the larges=
t
cross-disciplinary forum in Europe.
EFAH's objectives to identify and highlight the needs of the European
artistic community to European decision makers, and to thereby participate
in those decision making procedures; to improve the exchange of information
on the arts and heritage in Europe, between the cultural sector and those
involved in cultural policy making; to act as consultants in the field of
arts and heritage to European, national and regional policy and decision
making bodies.

6. Book of the month: Slack, by Tom DeMarco
What means Artsmanagement in the business context?
Tom DeMarco shows in his new book "Slack: Getting Past Burnout, Busywork,
and the Myth of Total Efficiency", that artsmanagement become more and more
important in the industry or the business world. In this world of lean
companies with low structures and high efficiency, most of the people have
no time for creativity and open minded thinking. But, to be fit for the big
changes of the next years or to become a learning organisation, it is
important to create open spaces for thinking and creativity. So
artsmanagement in the business context means: the support and management of
creative processes, the management of people with several concepts of livin=
g
and thinking, the management of several cultures, means to create, implemen=
t
and manage an open minded and creativ corporate culture.

specialization. Intrinsically interdisciplinary, APA-OSU draws upon the

8. Ticketing with the Internet
With the help of the internet, tickets are selling faster than ever before.
Convenience is the name of the game today and armed with a credit card
number, more and more people are making their purchases using a browser or =
a
telephone.
Technological advances in the ticketing industry were a popular topic at
this year=B9s INTIX Conference and how the internet fit into this mix was
certainly at the helm. With close to 50 ticketing companies exhibiting,
there seems to be plenty of business for everyone. Those organizations
taking advantage of the internet are seeing an avenue that not only
increases ticket sales but makes good business sense.
