PARTS OF THE WORLD

What?

A seminar with invited theoreticians and artists from Eastern Europe
(the countries of Central and Eastern Europe as well as the former
Soviet Union, including the Caucasus and Central Asia), offering
presentations, comments and analyses of contemporary phenomena in
Eastern European culture, with an emphasis on visual art.

Why?

To focus attention on cultural tendencies and artistic practices in
these countries that are interesting IN THEMSELVES, not merely as
"illustrations", "symptoms" or "consequences" of geo-political
realities. To sketch a series of portraits, through INDIVIDUAL
STATEMENTS, of a part of the world not infrequently off-handedly
represented or subjected to dubious generalisation. To attempt an
accurate description, through SUBJECTIVE EXPERIENCE, of the actual
state of affairs in East-West relations more than ten years after the
collapse of the Second World.

Where and When?

In Malm=F6 (Sweden's third-largest city, recently connected to
Copenhagen by bridge and tunnel), Monday, May 14 and Tuesday, May 15,
2001. The seminar takes place immediately after the opening of "Vi -
Intended Communities", the first exhibition at the Rooseum kunsthalle
after its new director Charles Esche took up his position. In
addition, the on-site architectural exhibition "Bo0" is opening a just
a few days after the seminar, including - among other events - the
exhibition "Homeless", curated by Boris Groys.

Organisers

The Malm=F6 Art Academy (its dean Gertrud Sandqvist), in collaboration
with Rooseum (its director Charles Esche and chief curator =C5sa
Nacking) and with other art institutions and organisations in Malm=F6.
The seminar is planned by Anders Kreuger, Swedish freelance curator
and critic currently living in Vilnius, Lithuania. PARTS OF THE WORLD
is supported by the Swedish Institute.
