Daniel Bar-Tal (Tel Aviv University, Israel)

"Making the Mind of Societies Engaged in Intractable Conflict"

DANIEL BAR-TAL is Professor of Psychology at the School of Education, Tel Aviv University. He is the author of, among others, "Group Beliefs" (1990) and "Shared Beliefs in a Society" (2000), and the co-editor of "The Social Psychology of Knowledge" (1988), "Stereotyping and Prejudice" (1988), "Patriotism in Life of the Individuals and Nations" (1997), "Security Concerns: Insights from the Israeli Experience" (1998) and, most recently, "How Children Understand War and Peace" (1999).

a film series presented by Central European University

This series - led by the renowned Hungarian director, Pal Schiffer - presents a selection of prize-winning documentary films.

The first film in the series:

"City People" (Andras Salamon)

This introductory film series will be followed by a series dealing with the daily life of the poor in post-communist Europe, from September 2001.

Drago Roksandic (CEU and University of Zagreb)

"Making an Atlas of the Religious History of Southeastern Europe: Problems, Approaches, Methods"

DRAGO ROKSANDIC is Head of the History Department at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Zagreb and Associate Recurrent Professor in CEU's Department of History. During the past five years, he ran "Triplex Confinium," a multinational project on multiple borderlands, including their religious dimensions. Now, in close cooperation with Professor Michael Mitterauer from the University of Vienna, a leading Austrian authority in historical anthropology and socio-cultural history, he is starting a new project, an atlas of the religious history of Southeastern Europe.

An Open Society Archives exhibition organized by the US Embassy in Budapest, the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and the Historic Landmarks Preservation Center in New York:

"The Landmarks of Chicago and New York: A Tale of Two Cities"

This exhibition, including 150 black-and-white photographs of architectural and cultural landmarks, traces the history of landmark designation in the two cities.
