Intro
Vom 25. bis 29. April er=F6ffnet das EUROPEAN MEDIA ART FESTIVAL
wieder spannende
Einblicke in die aktuelle Medienkunst aus aller Welt - von
experimentellen Film-
und Videobeitr=E4gen =FCber Internet-, DVD- und CD-ROM-Arbeiten bis zu
multimedialen
Installationen. Zu sehen sind  Produktionen international renommierter
K=FCnstler
wie auch erfrischende Arbeiten junger Talente, die sich durch ihren
Ideenreichtum
und die Lust am Gestalten unkonventioneller Bilder auszeichnen.

Gemeinsam ist allen eine -zwischen Spiel und Reflexion oszillierende-
Auseinandersetzung mit unserer mehr und mehr durch die Informations-
und Medientechnologien bestimmten Gegenwart. Dabei werden die
unbegrenzten
M=F6glichkeiten neuer =E4sthetischer Wirklichkeits- Konstruktionen
ebenso aufgezeigt
wie die Gef=E4hrdungen durch den elektronischen "Big Brother".

Dies wird auch im Kongress aufgegriffen, der sich mit der medialen
Selbstinszenierung
in Kunst, den Medien und der Alltagskultur besch=E4ftigt. Im
Multimedia Special des
Kongresses werden neueste Projekte aus den Bereichen Streaming Media
und Online
Film vorgestellt.

Den cineastischen Rahmen des European Media Art Festivals bildet das
internationale
Film- und Videoprogramm, die Retrospektive des kanadischen
Filmavantgardisten David
Rimmer sowie die Specials New Japanese Cinema und international
ClipCult im Filmtheater
Hasetor. In Gespr=E4chen und  Diskussionen mit den Regisseuren und
Autoren werden Hintergr=FCnde
und Zusammenh=E4nge vermittelt.
Gespannt sein darf man auch in diesem Jahr wieder auf die Entscheidung
des Bundesverbandes
der Filmjournalisten, die auf dem EMAF traditionell ihren Preis f=FCr
die beste deutsche
experimentelle Film- oder Videoproduktion des Jahres vergibt.

F=FCr eine Arbeit aus der Ausstellung wird zum zweiten Mal der mit
10.000 DM dotierte
OLB-Medienkunstpreis von einer international besetzten Jury vergeben.

Das Student Forum stellt - neben der gesamten Bandbreite studentischer
Medienkunst -
unter dem Titel Connecting Student Forum europ=E4ische Hochschulen
vor.

Inside/outside
Der Mensch im elektronischen Medien-Dschungel mit seinen
millionenfachen (Ab-) Bildern
ist das bestimmende Thema der diesj=E4hrigen Ausstellung. W=E4hrend
Harun Farocki (F/D) in
seiner Videoinstallation Ich glaubte, Gefangene zu sehen die
allgegenw=E4rtige Bild- und
Daten=FCberwachung in beklemmender Weise aufgreift, thematisiert
Jordan Crandall (USA)
den perversen Zusammenhang zwischen den abstrakt-cleanen Bildern von
Kriegsschaupl=E4tzen
und einem erotisierten Geschlechterkampf . Den schmalen Grat zwischen
einer heilen daily
soap-Welt mit ihren "shiny people" und der hereinbrechenden
Katastrophe verdeutlichen
Christoph Draeger (CH) & Reynold Reynolds (USA) in seiner mit
Videobildern durchfluteten
Wohnraum-Installation Apocalypso Place.

In neuronale Innenwelten f=FChrt Rotraut Pape (D) die Besucher mit
Split Brain 2.0 --in
dieser interaktiven Installation k=F6nnen sie sich durch die
tomographischen Schnitte
eines weiblichen und m=E4nnlichen Hirns bewegen, diese synchronisieren
und sogar
kommunizieren lassen.
Weiterhin l=E4dt ein magischer und sich korrespondierend zu den
Besuchern bewegender
Bilderwald -Trajets- von Gretchen Schiller & Susan Kozel (CDN) zum
interaktiven Spiel
ein, oder ein projiziertes weibliches Gesicht kann mittels langer
Akupunkturnadeln in der
Installation "Pin Cushin" von Mari Velonaki (AUS) in verschiedenste
Gem=FCtszust=E4nde gebracht
werden. Ein faszinierendes Schauspiel liefert Thomas Bartels (D) mit
seinen kinetischen
Skulptur: Zwei Schwimmer rudern im hohen Schiff der Kirche dem
Scheitelpunkt entgegen,
um dort zu einer leuchtenden Einheit zu verschmelzen, und dann wieder
gen Boden zu st=FCrzen.
Dar=FCber hinaus sind auch noch Installationen von Pia Wergius (NL),
Hanno Baethe & Zaki
Omar (D), Heiko Daxl & Ingeborg F=FClepp (D) und Gregory Barsamian
(USA) zu entdecken und
interaktiv zu erproben.

Zentraler Ausstellungsort ist die gotische Kunsthalle
Dominikanerkirche, die einen
idealen Kontrast zu den multimedialen Installationen und Projektionen
bietet. Weitere
Ausstellungsorte sind der historische Wehrturm B=FCrgergehorsam, die
Galerie Dreikronenhaus
und das Vertikale Museum des Felix-Nu=DFbaum-Hauses.


Kongress
Im diesj=E4hrigen Multi Media Center des EMAF (Haus der Jugend) werden
der Kongress,
die Multimedia Pr=E4sentationen und die Performances stattfinden. In
einem durch die
K=FCnstlerin Leigh Haas gestalteten Ambiente, werden die
Zukunftsfragen der Medienkunst
diskutiert und eine lebendige Verbindung zwischen den verschiedenen
Festivalbereichen
gekn=FCpft.

Mediale Selbstinszenierungen
Im Zentrum des Interesses stehen diesmal die medialen
Selbstinszenierungen in Kunst,
Medien und Alltagskultur -  von Jeff Koons, Tracy Emin oder Natacha
Merrit =FCber
Guildo Horn, Stefan Raab und Zlatko bis zu den tatooten, gepiercten
und gebrandeten
K=F6rpern der Techno- und Spa=DFgeneration. Es geht um das
Gesamtkunstwerk Ich, das in das
allt=E4gliche und sinnlich-schmerzhaft zu erfahrene Hier und Jetzt
=FCbersetzt wird - als
inszenierte und exhibitionistische Authentizit=E4t, mit der
gesellschaftliche Tabus
angegriffen werden.

Content First?
Is the media the message? Ein Klassiker der medientheoretischen
Auseinandersetzung -
zeitlos, aktuell, ungekl=E4rt. Aussagen wie die von Marshall Mc Luhan
werden im Round
Table Content First kritisch zur Diskussion gestellt.
Wo liegen die Probleme und wo die Chancen bei der Gestaltung der Neuen
Medien, der
Medienkunst und wie spiegelt sich dies in der derzeitigen
Hochschulausbildung wieder?

Multimedia-Special
Erg=E4nzt wird der Kongress durch ein breit gef=E4chertes
Multimedia-Special, in dem
K=FCnstler, Firmen und Hochschulen ihre neuesten Soft- und
Hard-Produktionen aus dem
Multimediabereich pr=E4sentieren. Ein Schwerpunkt liegt hier beim
Streaming und beim
Online-Film - ein Themenfeld, das sowohl f=FCr die User wie auch f=FCr
die kommerziellen
Firmen mit hochaktuellen Fragen verbunden ist. Wer produziert diese
Videos mit welchen
Tendenzen und ist hier eine neue digitale K=FCnstler-Generation im
Entstehen? Unter dem
Titel Clicks and Cuts werden neue Internet- und CD-ROM-Produktionen
vorgestellt, die
sich insbesondere durch das Zusammenspiel von Bild- und Soundebenen
auszeichnen.
Online Communities pr=E4sentiert Produktionen, die vom kommerziellen
Life Style- und

Performances
Gob Squad (GB): What are you looking at
Performance-installation im Container
In einem von innen verspiegelten Container spielt das Gob
Squad-Ensemble kontrastierende
privat-gesellschaftliche Ereignisse durch: Eine ausuferende
Hochzeitsfeier mit in
feierlichem Wei=DF gekleideten G=E4sten, ein exclusiv-dekadentes
Yuppie-Bankett oder auch
eine orgiastische Party von schwarz gekleideten Punks. Die Besucher
nehmen dabei die
Position der schamlosen Voyeure ein und sind nur durch das Glas von
den zum Teil auch
sehr intimen Aktionen und Emotionen der Performer getrennt.
Hochaktuell thematisiert Gob Squad in dieser Performance den in
Big-Brother gipfelnden
und inszenierten medialen Voyerismus sowie die allgegenw=E4rtige
mediale =DCberwachung und
Kontrolle. Aktuelle Tendenzen im daily TV, mit denen jede Spur von
Privatheit und
Intimit=E4t verloren zu gehen drohen.

People Like Us
Live Cinema Performance von der britischen Collage K=FCnstlerin Vicki
Bennett.
In einer stilvollen Atmosph=E4re mischt sie Live Musik und Bilder zu
einem
unterhaltsamen Schauspiel von dadaistischen Samples. Mit ihren ganz
eigenen Found Sound Collagen (Toncollagen) war People Like Us auf
Tournee in
ganz Europa und den USA. P.L.U. haben neun Alben mit den Plattenfirmen
Soleilmoon, Staalplaat and Hot Air herausgebracht.

Daikan
ist eine sich kontinuierlich weiter entwickelnde Soundscape
(Tonlandschaft) und wird von Thomas K=F6ner in einem verdunkelten Raum
aufgef=FChrt. Das zentrale Thema des Projektes ist das Erleben von
Ver=E4nderung und Verwandlung am Rande der Wahrnehmung. W=E4hrend der
Performance von
DAIKAN erlebt der Verstand eine Art schwebende Illusion.
Das Konzept der Komposition, die Bewegung der T=F6ne erschaffen den
intensiven Eindruck von Schwere.

Kino Hasetor

WILD WILD EAST- New Japanese Cinema
Das japanische Kino der letzten Jahre bringt Ungew=F6hnliches
zusammen: Manga-Comics
und Musik-Video, zarte Liebesgeschichten im Zombie-Horror oder
Yakuza-Killerorgien
in bunter Rock'n Roll-Umgebung. Das EMAF pr=E4sentiert vier dieser
neuen Nippon
Spielfilme, die die Grenze des Darstellbaren ausloten und durch
ungewohnte Schnitt- und
Erz=E4hlstrukturen beeindrucken.


CLIP CULT I
Highlights der aktueller Music Clips. Die bekanntesten Music-Clip
Regisseure in
einem Programm:  Chris Cunningham, Michel Gondry oder Spike Jones
z=E4hlen zu den
profiliertesten Videomachern auf den internationalen Musik-Kan=E4len.
Ihre filmische
Bearbeitungen der Musiktitel von Bj=F6rk, Autechre, Aphex Twin oder
Leftfield stellen
der Musik starke, skurrile Kurzgeschichten gegen=FCber, geben ihnen
Tiefe und Dichte.

CLIP CULT II
Teenage Riot Underground und 'Off'-Szene der Clip-Kultur sind im
zweiten Programm
vereinigt. Heftigen Post-Punk Attacken von Alec Empire und Philipp
Virus folgen
beatgeschnittene Material-Collagen von Holger Hiller, skurrile
Jonny-Cash-Pulps,
und sch=F6nste Abstraktionen der britischen Bilddesigner D-Fuse.
Home-Made REM-Karaoke
und 'Kill the DJ' bilden den Abschluss des  Best-Off-Music-by - EMAF.


Retrospektive
Der kanadische Avantgarde-Filmer David Rimmer stellt mit vier
Programmen eine
Werkschau seines filmischen K=F6nnes vor, die so umfassend  noch nie
in Europa
pr=E4sentiert wurde. Rimmer, der auf dem EMAF pers=F6nlich anwesend
sein wird, gilt
als Meister der mechanisch-fotografischen Filmbearbeitung und hat mit
diesem Verfahren
ganz au=DFergew=F6hnliche und ungew=F6hnlich sch=F6ne Bildlandschaften
geschaffen. Im Anschlu=DF
an das Festival haben wir eine kleine Tournee mit einem Teil des
Programmes organisiert.

VeeJay-Groove Party-Line im CLUB: B=DCRO
Mit zwei exclusiven Sessions im B=FCro und einem Gro=DF-Event wird der
VeeJay-Groove nach
seinem spektakul=E4ren Coming-Out im vergangenen Jahr wieder f=FCr
Furore unter den Tanz-
und Bild-Bewegten sorgen.

Mit Holger & Holger (Os), Stereokiller (K=F6ln) und illustren G=E4sten
aus dem Urban
Underground
Stufo Clubnacht im B=FCro am 27.04. 2001
Auf der Instant-City-Party am Freitag zeigen Miki Yui und Ralf
Schreiber als
spezialisierte Schwachstromelektriker, unterst=FCtzt vom Datenrauscher
Felix Hahn,
wie ein Netzwerk kleinster solargespeister Bauteilchen f=FCr hei=DFe
Beats und Rhythmen
sorgen kann.

VeeJay-Groove 1.3 am 28.04.2001
Mit dem VeeJay-Groove des vergangenen Jahres, der in einer
dreist=FCndigen TV-Produktion
f=FCr N3 m=FCndete, setzte das EMAF neue Ma=DFst=E4be f=FCr die
audio-visuelle Club-Kultur.
Auch in diesem Jahr werden mit den Berliner Grand Prix-Helden von
Bauhouse (Berlin),
D-Fuse und Techno-Head (London) und der First Cyberpunk-Rockband" von
Alexej Shulgin
(Moskau) exellente Highlights der internationale Szene aufgeboten.

Introduction:
>From 25 - 29 April the EUROPEAN MEDIA ART FESTIVAL offers once again
exciting insights into current international media art - ranging from
experimental film and video works, Internet, DVD and CD-ROM projects
to
multimedia installations. Productions from internationally renowned
artists as well as innovative works from creative young talents are on
exhibition.
They stand out with their imaginative ideas and their zest to create
unconventional images.
What unites them all is their debate about our present society that is
more or less determined by information and media technologies. They
show the
unlimited possibilities of new aesthetic reality constructions as well
as the dangers of an electronic "Big Brother".

This subject is taken up in the Congress that deals with the medial
self-presentation in art, the media and everyday culture.  The
Multimedia Special of the congress introduces new projects from the
areas Streaming
Media and Online Film.

The cinematic part offers the international film and video program,
the
retrospective of the Canadian film avant-gardist David Rimmer, as well
as the specials New Japanese Cinema and the international Clip Cult in
the
Filmtheatre Hasetor. Talks and discussions with directors and authors
enable the audience to discover the films' background and context.

We can eagerly await this year's decision of the National Association
of
Film Journalists. They annually award the best German experimental
film
or video production of the year.
For the second time, one work of the exhibition is awarded the OLB
Media
Art Prize worth 10.000 DM.
Apart from highlighting a whole range of media art works from
students,
the Student Forum presents European colleges under the title
Connecting
Student Forum.

We would like to invite you to take part in this exciting and diverse

Programme information
Exhibition
Mankind in the electronic media jungle with its millions of images is
the overall theme of this year's exhibition. In his video installation
Ich
glaubte, Gefangene zu sehen, Harun Farocki (F/D) deals with the
ever-present image and data surveillance in a sinister way. Jordan
Crandal (USA)
picks out the perverse connection between abstract clean images on the
scenes
of war and an erotic battle of the sexes as his central theme. In the
installation Apocalypso Place, a living-room is flooded with video
images:
Christoph Draeger (CH) & Reynold Reynolds (USA) emphasise the thin
borderline between an ideal world with its "shiny people" portrayed in
daily soaps and the impending doom.
Rotraut Pape's  (D) interactive installation Split Brain 2.0 guides
the
viewer into the inner world of neurons. You are able to move around
the
tomographic section of a female and male brain, to synchronise them
and
even make them communicate.
On top of that, you are invited to interact with the moving forest of
images, Trajets, an installation by Gretchen Schiller & Susan Kozel
(CDN). In the installation Pin Cushion by Mari Velonaki (AUS) you can
manipulate the projection of a female face into different moods with
long
acupuncture needles. Thomas Bartels (D) kinetic sculpture Schwimmer
gives a
fascinating spectacle: in the nave of a church two swimmers steer
towards the
vertex to melt into a shimmering unit, only to hit the ground again.
Furthermore you can discover and try out the interactive installations
by Pia Wergius (NL), Hanno Baethe & Zaki Omar (D), Heiko Daxl &
Ingeborg
F=FClepp (D) and Gregory Barsamian (USA).

The gothic church Kunsthalle Dominikanerkirche is the central
exhibition
space and an ideal contrast to the multimedia installations and
projects.
Further exhibition spaces are the historic fortified tower Wehrturm
B=FCrgergehorsam, the Gallery Dreikronenhaus and the Vertical Museum
of
the Felix-Nu=DFbaum-House.

Congress
The Congress, the mulimedia presentations and the performances take
place in this year's multimedia centre of the EMAF (Haus der Jugend).
In an
atmosphere created by the artist Leigh Haas the future of media art is
discussed and a vivid connection to the different festival areas is
created.

Medial Self-Presentation
The main topic is the medial self-presentation in art, media and
everyday culture - from Jeff Koons, Tracy Emin and Natacha Merrit, or
Guildo
Horn, Stefan Raab and Zlatko to the tattooed, pierced and marked
bodies of the
techno and fun generation. It is the self as a work of art that
counts.
It is translated into the everyday sensually painful here and now, as
a
staged and authentic persona with which social taboos can be attacked.

Content First?
Is the media the message? A classic in the media theoretical debate -
timeless, topical, unsolved. Statements by Marshall Mc Luhan, for
example, are critically discussed in the round table Content First.
Where are the problems and where the chances in the design of the new
media and media art, and how is this reflected in college education
today?

Multimedia-Special
A diverse multimedia-special complements the congress: artists,
companies and colleges can present their latest soft and hardware
multimedia
products.
The emphasis is on Streaming and Online-Film, a subject area that
raises
topical questions both for commercial companies and the users. Who
produces these videos, with which tendencies and is there a new
digital
generation of artists in the making? Under the title Clicks and Cuts
new Internet
and CD ROM productions are introduced that stand out because of the
integration of
image and sound levels.
Online Communities presents productions that range from commercial
life
style and fashion concepts or online games to subversive
self-marketing
strategies in the media world.


Performances
Gob Squad (D/GB): What are you looking at
Performance-installation in a Container
Inside a container full of mirrors the Gob Squad-Ensemble gives a
performance of contrasting private and social events: an excessive
wedding party with guests dressed up in white, an exclusive decadent
Yuppie-banquet or an orgy with punks clad in black. The viewer takes
up the
position of a shameless voyeur: only glass separates him from the
often very
intimate actions and emotions of the performers.
Their highly topical subject matters are staged media voyeurism such
as
Big Brother, as well as the ever- present media surveillance and
control.
These are current tendencies in daily television that erase any signs
of
privacy and intimacy.

People Like Us
Live Cinema performance by the British collage artist Vicki Bennett.
In
an ambient atmosphere she mixes live music and visuals taken from
found
footage to create an entertaining event of dadaistic samples. People
Like Us has
toured extensively in Europe and the US with her very own breed of
found
sound collage.  P.L.U. has released nine albums on the Soleilmoon,
Staalplaat and Hot Air labels.

Daikan
is an ever evolving soundscape which is performed by Thomas K=F6ner
in a darkened space. The main idea behind the project is the
experience of
changes and transformations, which lie on the edge of perception. By
experiencing DAIKAN the mind creates a state of suspended illusion.
The
concept of the composition / the movement of the sounds create an
intense impression of slowness.

VeeJay-Groove Party-Line at ClUB:B=DCRO
After its spectacular coming-out in the previous year, the
VeeJay-Groove
is going to create another sensation for the dance and visual
enthusiasts
with two exclusive sessions in the B=FCro and one major event.

With Holger & Holger (OS), Stereokillers (K=F6ln), Lichtsport
(Osnabr=FCck)
and illustrious guests from the Urban Underground.
Stufo Club Night at the B=FCro on 27.04.2001

At the Instant-City-Party on Friday the expert low voltage
electricians
Miki Yul and Ralf Schreiber are supported by DJ Felix Hahn. They will
show
how a network of the smallest solar fed modules can create hot beats
and
rhythm.

The VeeJay-Groove 1.3 on 28.04.2001-03-16
Last year's VeeJay-Groove at the EMAF resulted in a three hour TV
production for N3 and set new standards for the audio and visual club
culture.
Once again outstanding international highlights will be presented this
year, such as Berlin's Grand Prix heroes Bauhouse (Berlin), D-Fuse and
Techno-Head (London) and Alexej Shulgin's First Cyberpunk-Rockband
(Moskau).

Retrospective
The canadian avantgardist  filmmaker David Rimmer presents his skills
in four
programs. Rimmer is going to be present at the EMAF and is recognised
as a master
of mechanical photograhic filmmaking . he has created extraordinary
and exceptionally
beautiful visual landscapes.

Wild Wild East New Japanese Cinema.
In recent years the japanese cinemahas produced an unusal mixture of
Manga comics, music
videos,subtle love storiescombined with zombie horror or Yakuza killer
orgies in a a
lively rock'n'role atmosphere. The EMAF prsents four of these Nippon
films that cross
visual boundaries and stand out because of their unusal editing and
narrative structure.

Clip Cult I Recent music clip highlights
The most well known music clip directors are shown toghter in one
programme. Cgris
Cunningham, Michael Gondry and Sike Jones are some of the most
distinctive video
makers in the international music scene.They interpret the music of
Bjoerk, Autreche,
Ampex Twin or Leftfield using strong bizarr short stories giving them
depth and intensiry.

Clip Cult II
Underground and off scene of the clip culture are both in the second
programme.
Heavy post-punk attacks by Alec Empire and Philip Virus are follwed by
bbeatedited
sound collages by Holger Hiller , bizarre Jonny cash Pulps and
beautiful abstractions
by the british visual designers D-Fuse.
