Excursion to Budapest, 19 - 24 November 2018<br>

This seminar and excursion addresses the question that cannot be
avoided when we think about contemporary art in Budapest (and not only
in Budapest) today: what are the conditions under which art and
culture are produced, presented and perceived? Conditions that are
social, cultural, political, historical - and all of these things bot
in general, theoretical, and in very concrete, material ways.<br>
<br>
The social and political changes in Hungary since the advent to power
of the current Orban government give an example of how a radical,
anti-liberal ideology can impact cultural and artistic production, on
the institutional, the legal, the financial, and on the mental level.
They elucidate the relationship of art and populism in the age of
social media, and they point to the persisting role of historical
developments and events (1944, 1956, 1968, 1989, 2004, 2010, ...). The
developments that have followed in these last years, for instance in
Poland, and that are now also on the Italian horizon (and that some
people in Saxonia/Sachsen may also be dreaming of for the time after
the 2019 regional elections there), indicate that it is worth looking
carefully, and in solidarity, at the current efforts, achievements and
unavoidable failures of artists, curators and cultural practitioners
in Hungary.<br>

We want to meet people, see what they are doing, learn about victories
and defeats, share ideas, make friends. We want to put the personal
encounter of the students from Leipzig and Budapest at the centre of
the week. And we want to organise meetings with curators and
organisers who can help us to "learn from
Budapest".</font></div>
