A public lecture presented by the Central European University Jewish
Studies Project:

Victor Karady (Centre de Sociologie de l`Education et de la Culture,
Paris)

"Violence and Modern Jewish Experience from Feudalism to Communism"

Reception to follow

Born in Budapest, Victor Karady started his university studies in his
native city. After emigrating to the West in 1956, he studied in Vienna
and graduated from Sorbonne, France. He has been a full time research
fellow at the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique since
1968, and he has also lectured at universities in France, Hungary and
other European countries. His main research topics include Jewish social
history, elite education and the history of social mobility. He is an
external member of the Hungarian Academy of Science and author of over a
hundred scholarly publications.

A public lecture in the series "Renaissance, Revival and Enlightenment:
Concepts in Historical Perspective" presented by the Department of
Medieval Studies and the Department of History:

Carlo Ginzburg (Bologna - UCLA)

"Your Country Needs You! A Case Study in Political Iconography"

Carlo Ginzburg is a renowned scholar of European Renaissance and Early
Modern Age, and actively contibutes to the development of new methods in
history-writing, most remarkably to microhistory. Professor Ginzburg's
most famous books is still The Cheese and the Worms, but his other
noteworthy books are also include Ecstasies: deciphering the witches'
Sabbath, Clues, myths and the historical method, and most recently two
volumes on the historian's craft: History, rhetoric and proof, and The
judge and the historian.
