"Imagining the Balkans, and most significantly imagining oneself in
(relation to) the Balkans, has been a Romanian intellectual pastime for
more than two centuries. This talk outlines some of the central ideas,
paradigms and fantasies that shape and fuel such endemic ruminations,
aiming at a more abstract, and possibly more widely usable, theory of
ethno-national identity. The talk is based on a long-term research
project, which is likely to yield an intellectual history of Romania's
symbolic geography, and an analysis of ethnic ontology (i.e., the
attempt to endow the ethnic nation with metaphysical foundations and
legitimacy)."
